Bomb threat at Craig High
JANESVILLE – Craig High School students were all sent to the field house Wednesday morning after the school received a bomb threat.
School district spokeswoman Sheryl Miller said officials searched the field house first and then moved students there while staff member volunteers searched the rest of the building.
Miller said students went to the field house at about 10:45 a.m. and were on their way back to classes or lunch around 11:30.
Principal Mike Kuehne notified parents of the event through the district’s new automated message-alert system, Miller said.

FYI- they could've put new gym in parenthesis because some of the parents might not know what they mean by the field house, I know my parents didn't.

FYI- Oh I didn't realize that's what they call it. But we as the students just call it the new gym.

maybe it was a good idea to build the "fieldhouse" now they can use it as a bomb shelter.

I am curious to know if the school district has discussed their policy of having untrained people search the school with their insurance company. I would think that the insurance company would be concerned that one of these people trying to help would accidently set something off if the threat was real. I understand that it is a frequent event and to call the bomb squad each time is a strain on their resources; however that is what they are there for and that is why there are such steep consequences for calling in a fake report of a bomb.

As a staff member at Craig I think things were handled very well. There is a team for these kinda things but I think it happened so fast it was asked that the teachers on prep that hour would go to the office. Shortly After that they started to dismiss halls to go to the field house. In a situation like this,I don't think anyone would have said no. I personally did some bag searchs along with many others. Everything went as smooth as it could have. Thanks to all (students and staff) for handling everything so well!

I am told that everyone who searches is a volunteer. Principal Kuehne told me he doesn't know of anyone who was asked who didn't volunteer. Admin staff from downtown and other schools also came to help, sop.

Wow, the response was a far cry from back when I was a freshman in 2001 when we got bomb threats on a near monthly basis. Back then, we'd be broken up into two groups: one sent to St. John Vianney and the other to Roosevelt Elementary. And the Janesville SWAT team would be there to escort students out of the building before searching it, rifles at the ready. Now they send students a few feet from the school and have staff search it instead? Yay for safety! Granted, my sophomore year they sent us all the to the gym after receiving a bomb threat. I think they were growing tired of the false reports.

Policy some years ago was for substitute teachers to also search for hidden danger. I questioned if this was a rational move given substitute teachers often know the lay-out of a given school even less than anyone else in the building and would probably not be aware of things out-of-place if they did see something! Regardless, subs were considered as necessary for duty during such activities as the daily teachers.

I had a phone call too. I am glad to get the message, but it is also very disturbing. Hopefully this isn't going to be a school year with lots of bomb threats.

The automated system was great! Got the message both on my cell phone and my work phone. Although, I read that they had returned to classes here on the gazette. Maybe a follow-up call for those who can't access the internet during the day? I know, I'm picky. lol

Someone not wanting to take a test? Stupid. They'll be caught, and then they'll be sorry. Really sorry.
