Wis Democrats propose tax increase to create jobs

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Assembly Democrats want to pay for additional worker training and financial aid through a 1 percent income tax increase on those making more than $1 million.

State Rep. Cory Mason, a Democrat from Racine, announced the plan on Tuesday. The $145 million raised through the income tax would be used to get about $135 million in federal matching money.

Mason says the plan would provide additional financial aid and training to 40,000 Wisconsin residents.

Under the plan, grants would also be available to help small businesses retool to attract jobs. Additional money would also go toward tax credits to help startup businesses.

Mason says he hopes the Legislature passes the plan this fall.

This link is provided to show the truth about Texas and how it ranks compared to other states, in terms of job growth (effect of recession).

I'm curious as to just how many people in Wisconsin make $1M or more each year. To raise the $145M that is mentioned, 14,500 people would have to be taxed 1% on their 1M earnings. true, some people make more than that but do we really believe that there are somewhere between 10,000 and 14,500 in this state earning $1,000,000 annualy (not millionaires, not net worth of a million but making $1M or more in a year)?

Give this program six months and when it falls far short of what is being spent then suddenly it won't be about taxing those making $1M it will be about taxing the rich or the "winners in lifes lottery" with a new arbitrary number set by some idiot grazing at the public trough.

This type of economics has never worked. If you look at the states with the lowest unemployment levels and highest growth, they all have one thing in common, low taxes.

Tax the rich more - tax the rich more - it's just same old mantra...all that's missing is the shaven head and tambourine.

Minan, Alaska is also a big oil producer but it was dead last on that list. Texas has many other huge sectors, such as livestock and agriculture. Over 50 of the Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in Texas. At least consider how taxing consumption (sales) instead of productivity & assests (income & property) would have the effect of attracting enterprise and wealth instead of driving it away, not to mention removing the burden of taxes from exports. Texas is #1 in exports, too. Another coincidence?

Why don't we set up posts at the border, and when the Illinois I-Pass goes past it, charge their accounts for road improvements. Then we can allocate the money for training.

(I don't believe or disbelieve the survey. It's just more information.)

When is the State of Wisconsin going to spent it money wisely? If the taxpayer can live within their budget, then the State can too.

fool_on_the_hill; if you believe that study, then you believe that WI ranks #44 for quality and availability of their workers. I don't believe it.

Contrary to popular opinion, Wisconsin isn't the worst place to do business. Overall, we're about in the middle. Texas is #2.

If the person is a S-Corp for tax purposes the tax IS on their business. So that means they would go to 8% in Wisconsin when the Illinois tax is less than 4%? Most business owners on the State line may see this as more than a little incentive to move a few miles south.

The proposal is just taking the easy way out since they are not willing to take the road to fiscal responsibilty.

I have just three words. Id Dee Otic. Yes, I know that was lame, but so is this idea. When will the government realize that they can't produce more by taking more?

Increase taxes to CREATE jobs. That is simply too idiotic to even debate.

As for taxes on Texans, their state has suffered least from the global economic recession. Hmmm... I wonder if there might be some connection?

Texas has no income tax, and started the recession with a 9 billion dollar rainy day fund. It's not the lack of money, it's the lack of management, leadership, and new ideas Wisconsin needs.

This would work in theory, however...you create the government program, at some point you decide it's not being properly funded, then eventually the taxes filter down and pretty soon the middle class is paying for it. I just explained pretty much every government program that said the rich was going to pay for it.

Bad idea unless it is only for individuals, because this could hurt many small businesses that make just above this figure. They are on a tight line.
