Wis. observatory renovations complete
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The University of Wisconsin-Madison's space observatory is getting ready to celebrate renovations.
Washburn Observatory plans an open house on Friday, Sept. 11, to celebrate the two-year, $2.5 million project. Work included retrofitting the basement with a multipurpose room and offices to house the College of Letters & Science Honors Program.
The 128-year-old observatory is listed on the state and national Registers of Historic Places, forcing workers to follow National Park Service guidelines. The Wisconsin Historical Society reviewed the project and advised workers.
Jim Draeger is the society's deputy state historic preservation officer. He says the key rule was repair, don't replace.
