WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) — Central Wisconsin is getting a new area code.

The 715 area code is running out of phone numbers because of cell phones, fax machines, and other lines.

So in 2010 new phone numbers will have the 534 exchange. The change will start to be phased in for November.

The new system will cover the same geographic area. Current customers will keep 715.

In the Green Bay area, 920 is also running out of numbers. They will begin using 274 in the spring of 2012.

Wisconsin Public Service Commission decided on the new area codes last year because of the dwindling supply of numbers in the wireless world.

TFF indeed! But 4 digits make SO much more sense. Is like going from IPv4 to IPv6 for the internet, you're BOUND to run outta numbers! But at least it isn't as geographically discriminating or as called upon by humans. HEY why not go PHONEtic? "My number is homersimpson*com" :))

Homer-
We should put up a wall to separate the city and hire the Who, or at least a Who cover band, to rock the old area code. That'd be the thing to do.

I always thought we could stave off the proliferation of area codes by making all exchanges four digits instead of three, but nobody listened to me.

Do'h, it's happening all over again, just like in Springfield. Why do the rich people get to keep the old code? Why didn't anybody tell us in advance? Will I ever find a place to live in peace??? Do'h (again)

How horrible! My thoughts and prayer go out to the old area codes.
