MADISON, Wis. (AP) — You can forget about trying to get a driver's license, accessing vital records or calling a state unemployment office for help on Friday.

The offices that handle those duties are among many that are using the day before the long Labor Day weekend as a furlough day off.

State workers are required to take eight unpaid days off before the end of the fiscal year on June 30. Four of the days are required for all agencies, and the other four can be scheduled individually.

Many agencies have decided a long four-day weekend makes sense.

Among those closing Friday are the departments of Motor Vehicles, Military Affairs and Workforce Development, the state office of vital records and the secretary of state's office.
