Forest Service issues new firewood restrictions
RHINELANDER, Wis. (AP) — The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is tightening restrictions on firewood to keep a tree-eating beetle out of its ash trees.
The new restriction bans firewood gathered more than 25 miles from the northern Wisconsin forest unless the wood is certified by the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
Forest Supervisor Jeanne Higgins says the emergency order is to slow the spread of the emerald ash borer. She says the forest has nearly 300,000 acres with at least some ash trees.
The emerald ash borer's larvae attack ash trees and can eventually kill them by disrupting nutrient flow. The beetle already has been found in seven Wisconsin counties — Brown, Crawford, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Vernon and Washington.
