Carp removal leads to strikingly clear Wis. lake
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Experts who study waterways say one Madison lake is cleaner than it's been in many years.
Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison say Lake Wingra is so clear because more than half its carp have been removed.
Scientist Dick Lathrop says carp love the muck, so they're constantly churning up silt that affects water clarity. He says with fewer fish, the native plants are doing better and algae outbursts have been minimal.
Engineers aren't surprised at the results. They created an experimental enclosure two years ago that kept carp out of one part of the lake. The water there became strikingly clear.
Officials followed up by trapping and removing nearly 7,000 carp in two years.
Lathrop hopes the experience helps scientists achieve similar results at larger lakes.

tried eating a carp once, pretty bad. Some say smoked is O.K., but I'll pass on that as well. Carp are fun to catch, but don't throw them back in the water. At least keep them and fertilize your garden with them by burying them in the ground unless the critters get to the carp first.
I cannot believe people eat carp and think they are a delicasy in some regions of the country. To each their own I guess.
