MILWAUKEE—Southwest Airlines Co. begins service from Milwaukee on Sunday.

Spokesman Brad Hawkins says the discount carrier’s first flight from General Mitchell International Airport deports at 7:20 a.m. for Baltimore.

Among the festivities kicking off the airline’s inaugural flight is a tailgate party at McKinley Park & Marina for the Green Bay Packers game against Minnesota.

Southwest Airlines President, Chairman and CEO Gary Kelly makes his first visit to Milwaukee on Monday to tout what the airline’s presence will mean to the city.

Hawkins says Dallas-based Southwest is the nation’s leading discount airline and plans 12 daily nonstop flights from Milwaukee to Baltimore, Orlando, Tampa, Kansas City, Phoenix and Las Vegas with connections to 42 other cities.

I LOVE Southwest!! We had to cancel a flight on the morning of our departure. NO charge and they issued a credit voucher. We then used that travel voucher to purchase tickets to fly down to Miami to see Brett Favre make his regular season debut as a Jet. We overslept--which caused us to miss our flight. I called Southwest in a panic. The rep was SO nice. She told me that as long as we were to the departure gate within 2 hours of our regular departure time, we could get on the next available flight for NO additional charge. The still serve snacks/beverages, offer FREE pillows/blankets and don't charge for baggage. Every flight we have ever taken on Southwest has been early or on-time. An hour drive to Gen Mitchell sure beats the 2.5 hour drive to Midway!!!!

It has already brought the cost of flying down - along with having AirTran. Last year at this time I was looking for a flight to Denver, cheapest was $280 R/T - this year with AirTran or Southwest, $156.

That is great news. No more driving to Chicago-Midway to catch a Southwest flight. It will bring the cost of flying out of Milwaukee down also.
