Second Rock County swine flu death reported; school clinics canceled

Another Rock County resident died this week from the swine flu, Health Officer Karen Cain said.

She declined to release any information about the person, citing the family’s request.

It is the second swine-flu related death in Rock County, she said.

Rock County’s first swine flu death was reported in early October, and it also was the state’s first swine flu death since spring. That person had “underlying medical conditions” that contributed to the death, officials said.

On Wednesday, the state Department of Health Services said four more people in the state died from the swine flu. Department spokeswoman Stephanie Marquis said Wednesday the deaths were reported over the last week. There was one in Eau Claire County, two in Milwaukee County and one in Oconto County.

The health department also announced Thursday it is canceling its swine flu clinics in the Beloit and Parkview school districts next week because of the vaccine shortage.

Instead, a community swine flu vaccination clinic will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Beloit Public Library, 605 Eclipse Boulevard, Beloit. Vaccinations are free.

The inmates can have it, my kids wouldn't have gotten the vaccine anyway!

etown~well said. We don't need to know details on this. H1N1 is everywhere right now. The details from this death will NOT make any difference. To all those crying out for details~~did you leave your house today? Then you probably came in contact with the H1N1 virus and many others.

blueberry how brave of you to come on here and make up a name with one post and give out personal information. did you read the story , the family does not want information about her released, so i d like to know what give s you the right to go against their wishes?

it s also typical of them to leave the blog part open to a story like this so the paper can supply information but then not carry the blame for it . there used to be a time when someone passed on they were given respect and the dignity to rest in peace, and their families time to heal , but anymore we live in a very cruel world

One more note, please note that the shortage of vaccine and availability to healthcare will be common place once any scialized healthcare system is implanted by the democrats. My concern is what will happen the next time around, when its much worse than swine flu. Has congress already gotten their immunization shots? I'll bet they have.

The hipocracy of the system and the plans that they have are financially based and power based for self serving reasons. We need to stand up as a nation and demand more from BOTH parties.

Its time to diismantle the 2 party system and the corruption it brings.

I would think that the family and certainly the woman would want people to know if they were exposed. The name may trigger people to check their schedules etc.. to see if they became exposed and they could take preventative measures.

Also -- as for the shots. I am not sure why they are doing a community vacination. They should start at the schools. Even if they don't get all the kids vacinated, certainly the more they get to the better. The adults can wait, take care of the kids 1st.

Sandman, why do feel that you need to know the person's name and information. You were told about the death and that it was H1N1 what more do you think you need to know. Have some respect for the family

BayMom~My one daughter is severely immunocompromised, with heart/lung issues.

bullysarebest~High, prolonged fevers that do not respond to treatment should be watched very carefully. Push fluids (clears, such as juice, electrolyte drinks, and broth) and monitor how much they use the bathroom. If vomiting occurs and becomes severe, you may want to contact your primary for additional instructions.

The biggest defense we have is to wash our hands~frequently!

My kids are running high fevers~~like 104 even on tylenol. Can't keep anything down. Chills so bad they can't stop shaking. Body aches so bad that it makes them cry. Horrible congestion/cough. Like the flu~~just magnified and so much worse.

I think there are a few things going around. One of the "bugs" hits you like a ton of bricks. One minute your fine and the next....sicker than sick. I wonder if that is the H1N1?

My kids have been having the same thing that's been going around school...high fever and bad cough. I assume it is H1N1 since it has been going around and most seasonal flu isn't here yet.
Neither of them seemed/seem very sick as long as they have Tylenol or Motrin. Is there a chance the don't have H1N1 and will get sick again???

Sandman- yes it is highly communicable and is extremely widespread in the community right now. Most do fine and don't need Tamiflu; many people were prescribed it who really shouldn't have been and now most of the pharmacies are out of it. It should only be given to those with specific health concerns. Every year thousands across the country die of seasonal influenza and nobody seemed to care before; now it's suddenly troublesome.

The recommendations for giving Tamiflu are for symptomatic kids under 2 years old and people with flu symptoms and underlying conditions. If everyone with flu symptoms got Tamiflu, there wouldn't be any of THAT around either.

Right on, sandman. If not the name, give us the details. Adult? Elderly? Child? Other health condiditons? There's nothing embarassing about dying of the flu. Are they afraid that people will discriminate against the family? Not bloody likely. If someone dies in a traffic accident, they always tell us who it is. What's the difference?

Interesting. My children have also just had / are having the flu, and I was told "No Tamiflu, even for most of those who have underlying conditions. We're saving it for the pregnant women and severely immunocompromised children." Must depend on where you live or who your doctor is.

"She declined to release any information about the person, citing the family’s request." That's a sad commentary on the state of this country when the privacy rights of a dead person with respect to a highly communicable disease outweigh the right-to-know of the public at large.

It used to be that people with communicable diseases and their families were quarantined while they were considered contagious. I suspect that nowadays that would be too much of an imposition.

Oh well, I suppose that we'll eventually find out the truth ... when we're dead!

nurse4u~~good advice. I have three children who currently have it. One was diagnosed yesterday (confirmed with the test) and now the other two are running high fevers. I called the Dr and Tamiflu was prescribed right away for the other 2. So, all three are on it and hopefullly it will help!!

I would just like to suggest that if you or a loved one has a probable case of H1N1, you should CALL your primary health care provider. My daughter had a probable case, and we got her and her immunocompromised sister on Tamiflu right away. It worked really well. She started it on Monday and she is already feeling 98% better. The Rock County Health Department vaccinated my daughter on Tuesday. THANK YOU!!
