MADISON—The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says a prairie scene with a badger and meadowlark is the winning design in an online survey for a new license plate to raise money for endangered species in the state.

The agency proposed four designs for the plate and the badger received 68 percent of the more than 23,000 votes cast. Two of the designs — one featuring a great blue heron and the other an eastern bluebird — each got 12 percent of the vote, and the redheaded woodpecker got 8 percent.

DNR Secretary Matt Frank says his agency and the Department of Transportation will use the survey results to make a final decision on the new license plate design, which will be available to motorists in 2010 for a $25 contribution.

The new design will join the grey wolf, which has been featured on the plate since 1995.

If things continue the way they are now....DEMS will be an endangered species.

But I shudder at the thought of Mike Sheridan's picture on a license plate.

How about a Whooping Crane? Wisconsin is the home base for raising young ones and leading them with ultralight planes from Neceedah to Florida.

Did anybody vote for a guy holding a beer mug? Or, as thekid might have voted for, something else?

I figured the badger would get a lot of votes from UW alumni and fans, but I didn't think it was a large enough design unless you're really up close. Half of the panel is taken up by the flower.

Okay, I know this is an AP article, but isn't there a word missing?

"Two of designs — one featuring a great blue heron and the other an eastern bluebird — each got 12 percent of the vote, and the redheaded woodpecker got 8 percent."

Hey beeferer, just some thoughts. Don't be so ham-handed. Subtlety is the key to good sarcasm. In fact, see how much you'd have to say if you couldn't be sarcastic. Maybe you'll brighten someone's day.
