UNION TOWNSHIP—An Evansville woman, who was injured in a two-vehicle traffic crash Tuesday in Union Township, was listed in serious condition Wednesday morning at University Hospital, Madison, according to a hospital spokesman.

Mary Flaherty, 51, was flown by helicopter to the hospital and Highway 14 was closed for two hours after the crash happened at 4:42 p.m. on Highway 14, north of Holt Road, according to a news release from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office.

A car driven by Beauford Udell, 84, Beloit, failed to negotiate a slight curve and hit Flaherty’s oncoming SUV. The SUV rolled several times, landing on its passenger side on the highway. Flaherty had to be extricated from the vehicle and was flown to the Madison hospital with “incapacitating injuries,” the release said.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts. Alcohol and speed were not factors in the crash, the release said.

Quote "What sort of dumb comment is it to say that she went to Madison? Janesville does not have a certified Trauma Center. "
.
Actually Janesville is now a certified level 2 trauma center, what kind of a dumb comment is that?

The man refused transport; my wife was behind him, and saw the whole thing coming. She's still pretty shaken up.

And, along with the rest, our hearts pour out to the family. Godspeed to Mary.

What sort of dumb comment is it to say that she went to Madison? Janesville does not have a certified Trauma Center. Anyone with serious bodily injuries in this area goes to Madison (UW Hospitals is a Level I TC). That's how the system works.

cubfan, danias didnt make facts because if you read the news you would know what they were talking about. But between any hospital all hospitals have malpractices and have had incidents. It just matters how fresh the news reports are and how you judge. And yea what is the status of the man's condition. I am very curious on that? How sad. I am one that believes as well on age restrictions and driving tests after a certain age.

jviers77, I'm guessing more people who aren't seniors are involved in more accidents than those that are seniors. Overall there are more drivers of any age that shouldn't be on the road than we all care to admit.

danias...how can you make a statement like that without adding some facts?

Not to pick on the elderly here, but why is there not some sort of age provision for a retest of driving abilities? There are far too many elder folks out on the roads who probably shouldn't be. I hope both parties involved in this accident make a full and healthy recovery.

Thank God she was taken to a hospital in Madison, that alone improves her chances of a full recovery. My thoughts go out to her and her family.
