JANESVILLE -- A Janesville man accused of killing a motorcyclist in a hit-and-run crash pleaded guilty Tuesday in Rock County Court.

Omar Miguel Lopez, 24, of 2323 Mt. Zion Ave., pleaded guilty to felony hit-and-run resulting in death.

In exchange, the charges of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle, knowingly operating while revoked causing death and domestic battery were dismissed as part of a plea agreement. The judge can consider the charges at sentencing.

An operating after revoked ticket also was dismissed.

Lopez was driving a car east on Mt. Zion Avenue at 4:10 p.m. Saturday, April 11, when his vehicle collided with a small motorcycle driven by Bradley Griffith, 45, of 2614 Vail Court, No. 2, Janesville, according to the criminal complaint.

Griffith died about a month later.

Obviously, he had a license at one time in order for it to be revoked. Shouldn't have even been on the road. Period.

Zoom, I'll assume you've never had an adrenaline rush. Fear is very powerful. Very. It can make the most reasonable person do the most insane things. Like I said, I sure as heck am not saying he made the right choice. I am saying that at that point, he probably wasn't even able to use his head well. I bet as he (most likely) sped off, he was thinking something like, "That wasn't a man. That was a dog or a bear or something, right? Maybe it was a scare crow or something. Anyways, I was only going like 10 miles per hour, I think. I don't think I killed him. No, if it was a man, he definitely didn't get killed. I'm not a killer. I need to get home, where its safe."
Like momof5 said, hey, yeah, it's b/s that he ran. But for some, an intense situation like that, running is already hard-wired into their body.

Thanks, momof5.

Bobb and wth,

Have you ever been in your car driving, and someone runs a red light? Maybe someone doesn't wait their turn at the stop sign. Some people drive insanely slow, while others live life on the fly at excessive speeds. I've seen people have their left blinker on for an hour, then turn right. Old people often have this very peculiar problem with the accelerator sticking. There are a TON of people out there who shouldn't drive! Just today, some punk in a big truck didn't wait his turn at a controlled intersection I was at. I have a TINY car, and so I lurched forward at him anyway and laid on the horn. Probably really not the best decision I've ever made, in hindsight. The point is, though, there are a lot of terrible drivers out there who haven't (and some may never) had their license revoked.
°
I don't know why his license was revoked. Do any of you? Maybe it was revoked because he just never got one in the first place. He probably got caught driving without a license, and bam, now it's revoked. Or maybe his license was revoked from drunk driving? Perhaps drugs were found in his car at some point, or maybe they just found weed. Hey, we can speculate all day. Point is, having your license revoked does not necessarily mean that if you decide to drive anyways, you are less prone to "accidents" and more prone to bad driving than anyone else.
°
Look, I'm not saying what he did was okay. It flat out sucks. Worse for Mr. Griffith and his family than anyone else. But you know what? It was an ACCIDENT! I hope that part of the reason Mr. Lopez got the deal he got was because he truly does feel terrible about what happened. I think most reasonable people would.
°
Why do people get so bent out of shape for a lighter sentence for an ACCIDENT? Child molesters, rapists, heroin addicts, drunk drivers.... these are all people who generally, people feel get too light of sentences. I totally agree with the majority there. They need to bring the hammer down hard on those punks. But for a guy who had the misfortune of getting into an accident that killed someone... come on. He didn't mean to do it, I bet he genuinely feels like a piece of crap, and I can just about guarantee you that unless he has some sort of metal problem, he will NEVER hit someone again (within reason. I might as well explain that. Crazy stuff happens, people do fall out of the sky sometimes, people jump out in front of cars, there are bad intersections... but this guy is far less likely to hit another person than ANY ONE other driver who hasn't hit someone. Plain and simple.)

So if adrenaline is the reason for him fleaing, what is the supposed reason for driving after revoked to begin with? Oh, that's right, THERE ISN"T ONE!!

No way I would be able to "run"....when the adrenaline kicks in, my legs collapse beneath me! Adrenaline is powerful!

Zoom: thekai is right, and so are you. It is total BS but not everyone has the "fight" instinct. There are some cowards who take the path of least resistence and prefer the "flight" instinct. It is adrenaline based.

"Adrenaline kicks in, and for some people, the "flight" reflex is all they have. So they run."

What complete BS. Running from an accident is a completely voluntary choice. Adrenaline has nothing to do with it.

There has been no sentencing in this case (2009CF000886). Sentencing will be in January.

It could happen to anyone. You're driving down the street and glance away for a little bit (bad driving behavior, but I don't think there is one driver out there who has never done it) and then, POW! You hit someone. Adrenaline kicks in, and for some people, the "flight" reflex is all they have. So they run. I'm not saying that's right. It's quite obviously the completely wrong thing to do. When your adrenal glands are pumping faster than fire hose, though, your judgment is apt to be clouded. I've done stupid things when my adrenaline was rushing through my body. I'm sure the cops were able to link this man to the crime on their own, but I would like to think that once the adrenaline was gone, the guilty conscience of Mr. Lopez would have eventually won.
°
It doesn't say that he was drinking and driving, does it? Drinking and driving, I have no tolerance for. A complete accident though, I can have sympathy for the guy. I bet he's going to feel terrible for the rest of his life, because he took Mr. Griffith away from his friends and family, permanently.
