MILWAUKEE (AP) — The sister of a Milwaukee Public Schools teacher missing after kayaking on Lake Superior in Minnesota says her brother is an experienced paddler.

The Lake County, Minn., sheriff’s office says Douglas Winter’s kayak was found bobbing in the water about 2 p.m. Tuesday along a Lake Superior beach about an hour north of Duluth near the Twin Points area.

The department said the 48-year-old was last heard from about 8:40 p.m. Monday when he called a friend to say he was about 2 miles from shore, could not see land and the waves were getting large.

His sister, Karla Winter-Schulz of San Diego, said Winter is an experienced kayaker.

Officials searched for Winter until about 7 p.m. Wednesday. The sheriff’s department said it planned to resume the search this weekend.

Another newspaper reported that authorities recovered his lifejacket with his prescripion bottle in the pocket on shore, no body. There may be more involved in this than a simple kayak accident.

I've been kayaking on Lake Superior many times in rough seas, but never this late in the season. The water temperature and waves can be treacherous. Let's hope and pray for a good outcome.
