Wis. assisted suicide trial delayed for defense
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A trial for a Wisconsin prison inmate accused of assisting in the suicide of his cellmate has been delayed at the defense's request.
Joshua Walters was set to stand trial next week on charges he encouraged and helped Adam Peterson hang himself with a bed sheet at Dodge Correctional Institution. The 20-year-old has pleaded not guilty.
An aide to Dodge County Circuit Court Judge Andrew Bissonnette said Tuesday the trial has been delayed but a new trial date has not been set. Walters' attorney asked for more time so a private investigator can finish reviewing the case. A pretrial hearing that had been scheduled for Tuesday was also canceled.
Peterson was serving a life sentence after pleading guilty to fatally stabbing Madison resident Joel Marino in 2008.
