Shredfest planned to protect identities
APPLETON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Better Business Bureau is co-hosting what it's calling shredfest in three cities in a campaign to educating consumers about protecting themselves from identity theft.
Free shredding of documents is being offered in Appleton, Madison and Milwaukee on Saturday.
Organizers say shredding documents like canceled checks, credit and debit card receipts, bank statements and paycheck stubs significantly reduces the chance of identity theft.
The Better Business Bureau says the last time it hosted shredfest, more than 21,000 pounds of important consumer documents were destroyed.
The Federal Trade Commission says up to 9 million Americans have their identity stolen each year and most involve documents being taken directly from the victim.

There's no excuse when a little wastebasket-top shredder costs $12 at Wal-Mart!
