MADISON, Wis. (AP) — More than 8,200 jobs were created or saved in Wisconsin thanks to federal stimulus money, according to an audit submitted with the federal government.

All 50 states were required to submit the report on Saturday and Gov. Jim Doyle’s administration released highlights on Tuesday.

The governor’s report shows that Wisconsin was awarded just over $1.9 billion in stimulus money during the first reporting quarter. The report says that money helped created or save 8,284 jobs.

Doyle’s office says the majority, about 6,100, were public service jobs such as teachers, police officers and firefighters.

The White House predicted that Wisconsin will see 70,000 jobs under the stimulus by the time all the money is spent.

Wow, last I checked the Federal website, only about 89 jobs related to stimulus where available. Actually, I've never seen more than 89 and most were re-post or posting for border patrol jobs. None of the jobs I've seen would work for most of those laid off in SW.

artxette; apparently you havent been paying attention so I'll bring you up to speed - This mortgage mess / recession started way before GW was ELECTED - let it go he won. Secondly, dont know if you've noticed but its actually gotten WORSE since Jan & Obama has spent more in 9 months than ALL previous presidents combined - so nice try blaming this on GW. At this point I'm just HOPING he'll leave me with some CHANGE when he leaves office in 3 more years!!!!

If you are out of work, and watched the Job Service job search site over the months, you could see the few jobs "created" by the stimulus package here in Wisconsin. They were and are marked with a logo next to the job. Most I found were minimum wage, summer jobs targeted at those 18-25 years old. How any of those jobs "stimulated" the economy here, we will never know, I do know this, NONE of that money created any jobs for those of us older home owners that have been unemployed this year...
A good idea that fell into the local government's "pet project" plans.

I wonder how different our economy would be right now if the the Supreme Court didn't hand the election to W.

I have faith that our president can get us through the mess that was created for him.

The money did not just pay for "jobs", it paid for equipment, buildings, roads, and bridges. That is also $2 billion in added demand to Wisconsin's economy, particularly important given that 31,000 manufacturing jobs are gone, approximately $1.5 billion in annual payroll. (Actually, it would be more accurate to compare quarterly payroll, which even generously can't be more than around $500 million.) This is spending that has helped Wisconsin families and businesses stay afloat during a period when consumer demand has fallen to record lows. The stimulus has directly helped Wisconsin communities and will continue to help them for years to come with the permanent investments made.
.
Wisconsin has been hard-hit by the recession due to our high dependence on manufacturing jobs, which are closely tied to aggregate economic demand. It is precisely why the stimulus is so important to this state.

There is no way to quantify "saved" jobs so that statement is rather nebulous. The rest of the story below.

It's been, what, 40 or so years since the beer tax has been raised in Wisconsin? Why not add 5 cents a can/bottle to add revenue. That's only 60 cents a 12 pack, which I'd have no problem with. With the amount of beer we 'Sconies drink, that would be a huge revenue stream. Not only could it fund drunk driving education, but could also help fund road construction and highway maintanence. Then we wouldn't need to worry about stimulus $ in the future.

Only $230,000 per job -- and some people say that the government is trying to bankrupt us . . .

Seriously, the private sector could have created and protected a lot more jobs if businesses and consumers weren't being destabilized and made fearful of investing in anything by this crazed governmental spending spree.

SEL 1985--No one could expect you to take them seriously- they disagree with those liberal blinders you're wearing! Let's also remember that counting "saved" jobs is as subjective as you can get!

Let me get this straight. Wisconsin was "given" $1.9B of own taxpayer money to save 8,284 of our own jobs. That's a little more than $229,000 per job. Our children and grandchildren will be happy to know they supported our high income jobs when they pay off the stimulus for us !

Just think if Wisconsin didn't tax the hell out of everyone and everthing. Jobs, and companies would be moving here rather that out

So basically the state was living well beyond it's means and running a serious deficit and the government stepped in and paid the bills for a year. What happens next year when the federal government doesn't subsidize Wisconsin teachers, cops and fire fighters?

Liar! It's not true! Rush said the stimulus isn't working! Hannity said the stimulus isn't working! This is a liberal conspiracy lie!
