MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A new report shows that state and local taxes in Wisconsin claimed 12 percent of personal income in 2007.

The Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance report relies on data released last month by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The alliance says the percentage of personal income claimed by taxes in Wisconsin is 12th highest nationwide. However, when looking at it based on the amount of taxes paid per person, Wisconsin ranks better at 20th.

Based on taxes as a percentage of personal income, Wisconsin was ninth highest for property taxes, 12th for income, 24th for corporate and 33rd for sales.

The 12.16 percent of personal income spent on state and local taxes was down a tenth of a percentage point from the previous year but still a half-point above the national average.

So either Shocky is lying ("my wife is a supervisor") or his wife really is a supervisor and has no understanding of how the program works. Pretty scary either way

shocky52:
I am sorry but you are wrong, please check out the facts on the website. Food stamps do rollover each month.

Also most of the computer checkout systems are already programed as to what is and is not allowed to be put on a food stamp card. Years ago people were asked to separate their food items from the not allowed items, but today they are just scanned on through so not as much training is needed for the employees to try to remember what is allowed and what not.

Again as stated earlier check out the wisconsin foodstamp website. It will answer all of your questions about the Quest card and the program itself.

sorry, shocky, but you don't know what you're talking about. Look up the Food Stamp Monthly Allotment chart, and you'll see how wrong you are. So YOU get your facts straight.

Actually food stamps do carry over to the next month. If you do not use your quest card in over a year, then they are lost.

Here are some of the requirements of the food share program:
FoodShare Wisconsin Home>> Spending Your FoodShare Benefits>>

Spending Your FoodShare Benefits
You can use your benefits to buy food at some farmers markets and at grocery stores that have the Quest® sign.

Your benefits will be put into your FoodShare account using an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) system. You can spend them by using your Wisconsin QUEST card.

Your QUEST card lets you use your benefits at the swipe card terminals in the check-out line in food stores. You use your card like a debit card and there is no fee to you.

FoodShare benefits can only be used for food and for plants and seeds to grow food for your household to eat. Sales tax cannot be charged on items bought with FoodShare benefits.

FoodShare benefits cannot be used to buy:

•Any nonfood item, such as pet foods; soaps, paper products, and household supplies; grooming items, toothpaste, and cosmetics
•Alcoholic beverages and tobacco
•Vitamins and medicines
•Any food that will be eaten in the store
•Food that is hot at the point of sale
*
check out the states website for accurate info on this program.

markr: 1st of all get you facts right. My wife is a supervisor and have a complete knowledge on how welfare works. The monthly money doesn't roll over to the next month. It has to be used in the month it was issued. Also all employees have to have training on the welfare usage, what they can buy and what not. You probably have no knowledge on how it works. I know 1st hand, my uncle is blind and gets 20.00 a month, and it must be used in the month it was issued. Get your facts right before spouting out.

Mr. Janesvillean,
those darn republican and their incessant spin!!!!
I prefer to go aling with Mr. President Barak Obama -- and slowly but surely close down those lines of communication.
In the meantime, keep attacking them with the "right-wing source" argument. It works every time.
Thanks for votin' for me.
I love you too.

Wisconsin taxes are the exact reason we are moving to Tn. when we retire next year. We would love to stay in Wi. close to our grandchildren,we simply will be unable to afford the high Wi. taxes on our retirement income. Tn. has no state income tax and property taxes on a 169,000 home are aproximately 700-900 a year (eastern Tn.). We are not the only ones, we were surprised when we went down last summer to purchase property, to find how many other people around the area are from Wi. Our state legislators had better wise up; there is alot of money leaving Wis.

A person receiving food stamps could not use their food stamp benefits and allow them to accumulate for several months. You have to use the benefits within the year you receive them, so it is possible someone could have a $3,000 balance.

shocky...Food Stamps is a FEDERAL, not a state, program. The allotments are calculated the same way in EVERY state. Wisconsin does not give more than other states. The current allotment MAXIMUM for a household of TEN people is 1502.00/month. That is the most 10 people can receive if they have zero income. Income reduces it. So your wife isn't reading the scanner very well. No wonder we have such high grocery bills...the clerks are so busy misstating the help others receive that they mess up the work they are supposed to be doing.

"Maybe you need to actually track your expenses using Quicken, Mint.com, or just a spreadsheet, since you're so unclear on where your own money is going." janesvillean spewed

janesvillean, maybe you need to learn how to read and comprehend, either that or step aside and let the adults have their conversation.

what we need is to get some of these people mad as h--l like us. I would be ready to stomp the streets but most of you fools are like sheep and would never join in. what happened to us; are we so lazy the we can not even get of our duffs and let these do gooders keep taking and taking until they start putting 4 or 5 family's in our houses cause we might be to comfortable and have to much?

My spouse works at a grocery store. You wouls not believe the amount of money on ebt(food stamps) card. When they scan the card some of the card amount range all the up to $3000.00 and down. That is pure nonsense. Noone needs that anount of food stamps per month. 95% of the people aren't even handicapped. No wonder people flock to Wisconsin to get welfare....

Janesvillean, The 12% number is for state and local taxes only. add in 28% (before the increases go in next year) and the tax burden becomes 40%. Add in Social Security tax and you are at 45%. Now, add in sales tax but you can't simply use the tax rate because you are now spending dollars that you have already been taxed on and the number jumps to near 55%. Allow for some deductions on the federal for state and local taxes and the tax rate is half of what many people make.

You have a report from a right-wing organization that says you pay 12% overall in taxes, yet you actually firmly believe you pay SIX TIMES that much? I guess there's no use putting facts in front of someone so utterly credulous. The average person pays 30-40% of their income on housing alone, and between 20-30% on food. Maybe you need to actually track your expenses using Quicken, Mint.com, or just a spreadsheet, since you're so unclear on where your own money is going.

SD and Shopier, your numbers are probably close. And yes people dont care or are too stupid to care. I dont see any posts on here stating how more taxes are a good thing and only a handful of people that actually notice. Income taxes, both Fed and state, property taxes, sales taxes etc. it all ads up.

Lower fed income taxes to 10% accross the board and state to 5% and the govenment will have so much money they wont know how to spend it. I would also have more money and will more than likley actually spend somthing than save it. Also think of all of the money people will have to give to those in need, instead of the Gov. saying they will do it for me.

SD, you may well be correct in your 75% estimate. I always roughly estimated 60-65%. One thing for sure is that the taxes will go up, and the hidden taxes, (fees, permits, registrations, etc.) are going up on a regular basis.

Revoulution? Wistful thinking, I fear. So many individuals will not even be aware or care about anything untill they can't watch the game or American Idol because they can no longer afford electricity.

So where does the U.S. Census Bureau get its data? It's hard for me to believe anything coming out of DC today, I have to assume that the data is manipulated for political purposes. At any rate, it would be interesting to know the TOTAL tax burden, which would include Federal, Social Security, and all of the hidden taxes, not to mention all the "fees" we are forced to pay. My estimate, which virtually none of you will believe, is when you take into account ALL taxes and fees, at all levels, this amounts to about 75% of your total income. If people truly understood how the various governments are fleecing us, there would be a revolution.

I think it is time to seriously look at cutting down the Wisconsin budget, we are getting closer to socialism as we speak. eventually we will be at 20% if we do not do something now!
