MILWAUKEE (AP) — A Milwaukee man whose military flare sparked a $50 million meatpacking plant fire this summer has been sentenced to 90 days in jail.

Joshua J. Popp was also sentenced Thursday to three years probation and 500 hours of community service.

The 23-year-old apologized and said he took responsibility for his actions.

Prosecutors say Popp handed the flare to his 25-year-old brother in July. They say Kurtis J. Popp fired it, and it landed on the roof of the nearby Patrick Cudahy Inc.

The judge ordered him to report to jail for the month of July for each of the next three years. He was also ordered not to own weapons or set off fireworks.

Kurtis Popp will be sentenced Oct. 26.

Regardless of the outcome, the truth still exists that this was an accident. These boys didn't intentionally mean to start the factory on fire.....so yes, that is what insurance is for, I agree. I would hate to live with the guilt these boys will have for the rest of their lives....

I agree...it is an interesting sentence. It sounds like it was an accident and an expensive one at that!
