Larson Acres gets plan commission approval
MAGNOLIA TOWNSHIP--The Town of Magnolia Plan Commission on Thursday night unanimously recommended that the town board approve Larson Acres' application for a dairy farm expansion.
The town board will hold a public hearing and could act on the application at its regular November meeting.
Larson Acres submitted an application to build a $12.8 million expansion. The project would double the farm’s herd to 5,275 Holsteins. Currently the farm raises 2,668 animals on two farms at 18218 W. Highway 59, Evansville, and 17162 W. County B, Brodhead.
The farm has gotten most of the approvals it needs for the project, spokesman Mike Larson said.
Construction already is underway.

I hope that the people that are complaining about the smell do not eat meat, veggies or dairy! Yes, I know farms smell, my children spend a lot of time at their uncle's farm, and yes, when they come home, I barely want to let them come in the house...but where would we be without farms? I am happy for the Larsons, WI used to be the dairy state, whatever happened to that?

I would trade my cramped, no space city lot for a few acres with a little smell.

this farm is not on West Main st Evansville. It's in country. Where farms belong. The complaints about the smell are stupid. IT's the country. That is what you find in the country, farms. I agree if you don't like it , move to the crammed, no space , city. I am sure soon enough you would find something you did not like about that.

How is it that Larson can build a huge farm like that when milk is so cheap and corn and beans are not paying??
I thought the bigger you got the harder you fall??
I am not a farmer and don't understand where the money comes from to keep going.
Do farmers pay taxes?? Maybe not? Who will pay for the debt our country is in?

One good one for Larson Acres. You talk about "These rich big farmers will pay the taxes to take care of us". Let me tell you, they better be rich or they will be out of business, then guess what. You'll get awful hungry once all these big rich farms are gone. Have you a clue why the small farms are no longer? You have any idea how much they invest in 1 acre of corn before harvest time? Didn't think so. How many acres of crop can you afford to plant and only hope that good ole mother nature takes care of it. The old says goes, engage brain before putting mouth in motion. You city slickers have no clue what a farmer deals with year after year.

This is is a difficult situation.
This kind of farm will kill smaller farms and drive them out of business. Anyone remember the small town businesses? Now Walmart is the place to shop.Do you shop the small local places? Well then, this is what you get.
Wages are so low you can't live on them and the jobs are not available . Oh well, I do believe that soon the government that supports these big farms will support us and we won't have to work.
These rich big farmers will pay the taxes to take care of us.

queenb: How far do you live from Larson Acres? My family member lives 2 miles away and when the wind is blowing it sure doesn't smell like a great asset. By the way he lives on a farm too, with animals.

I can hardly stand the smell now when I drive by. Imagine it doubled. I feel for the people who live nearby.
