MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Gov. Jim Doyle has signed a bill that clears the road to Lambeau Field for Green Bay Packer opponents.

The measure allows police to escort any vehicle processions through red lights.

Police wanted the bill to clarify whether they could escort processions through stoplights. The Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton, where Packer opponents stay, wanted the bill to ensure teams get a faster, smoother ride to Lambeau and keep coming to the hotel.

The state Senate passed the bill last month. The Assembly passed it in June.

Doyle signed it into law Tuesday.

I can't believe this!! I say, with the other person who suggessted it, Let the hotel pay for it, they are making big bucks anyway!! I've stayed at the radisson paper valley and their room rates are not cheap!! maybe if they stayed a little closer to the stadium, where their are lots of hotels, they wouldn't have such a hard time getting there!! When we went the hotel in GB they bused us over, but I guess they are to big for that!!

Just hope I'm never the guy in the back of an ambulance fighting for life, waiting for a procession of overpaid "professional" athletes to dash off to work under a police escort. Just the thought of this preferential treatment for multi-billion dollar sports frachises makes me want to literally vomit.

Only way I'll ever get this treatment is when I'm in the back of a big black car on my way to the cemetary. At least I'll be able to enjoy the luxury once.

Mutual aid.

Just another case of heaping more and more special privileges upon the already privileged, while taking a dump on the average folks of Wisconsin. We have tens of thousands of Wisconsinites who are unemployed and do well to afford the electricity to watch a game on television. They get hung up on when calling for unemployement because there aren't enough operators. They can't get BadgerCare after Friday. They have to drive to other states or casinos to buy cigarettes because the Democrats have hammered them with a tax that equates to cruel and unusual punishment.

But it's ok to have a state law to give speedy rides to pro athletes who make millions of dollars a year! It's ok to take federal money for county nursing homes away from those counties and instead buy trains on a no-bid basis, forcing the counties to hold a vote to exceed levy limits or else close the nursing homes.

I was an ardent supporter of Attorney General Jim Doyle. However, the combination of a Deomocrat legislature and Democrat Governor have been disastrous for their party and for the state.

copperguy, the issue is whether the Outagamie County Sheriff's Department could wave the team through stoplights in Brown County. The county does this so that the hotel can continue getting NFL teams exclusively, and the hotels in Green Bay metro objected even though Brown County had permitted them do so for years. Now, Brown County could deputize the Outagamie deputies, but that puts them in an awkward political position, so a state law was needed to override Brown County.

Here's a news flash. Police Officers have the authority to direct traffic as they deem appropriate. We can wave traffic through red lights, make traffic stop at green lights, direct traffic the wrong way on a one way street, or engage in any other form of direction.

When the Dalai Lama was in Madison, Dane County SO had a detail that controlled traffic everywhere the procession went. Same for presidential candidates.

This was totally unnecessary at a legislative level. One more step to slap the average guy and glorify those who are already given way too much privelege! Ridiculous!

How about this...The next time I am visiting friends in the GB area, and get stuck in Packer traffic for 1 1/2 hours, the police give ME an escort out of there?

Good grief! What a waste of our legislative dollars! I'm about ready to shed my "independence" and join the Republican Party, thanks to Governor Doyle and this joke of a legislature!

The escorting through red lights has been going on for many years. This just deals with a potential question of liability if something should happen.

It just puts the bus convoys on the same par as funeral processions which are allowed to proceed through red lights.

This is only about a 40 minute ride to begin with. What will this save them, about 5 to 10 minutes? For what the assembly, senate, and the governor make in pay, how much time did this take out of their sessions to save opposing teams maybe a little over 60 minutes throughout the whole season? I know the Packers bring a ton of money to that region, but what do they care how long it takes a team to get there from Appleton. The longer and crappier the bus ride the better.

What were the NFL teams going to do if they didn't get a police escort, take their football & go home. Send the hotel a bill for the cost of this joke.

last i checked the packers bring in a ton of money for the state. so all of you just need to shut up! I don't want any higher taxes, just because you guys are a little ticked off that someone receives something more than you. Get with it, not everyone is equal! The sooner you realize this the better.

And why do they need a faster smoother ride? Instead of leaving the hotel a little earlier for the game, it will allow them extra time to get out of bed from a previous night of carousing?
