MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The University of Wisconsin System's chief financial officer says his job may be on the line if an $81.4 million information technology project fails.

UW System Senior Vice President Tom Anderes told lawmakers Tuesday he is responsible for the project to install a new payroll and benefits system and assumes he will be fired if it doesn't work.

His comments came as lawmakers on the Joint Committee on Information Policy and Technology peppered UW System officials with questions about the project, which has already hit some snags.

Rep. Kitty Rhoades, R-Hudson, told system officials they are "at a crossroads with taxpayers." She says there is great skepticism about the project, but they have an opportunity to gain public trust if it succeeds.

And on top of that outrageous pricetag and lack of accountability, the firm they contracted with is under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

A "project to install a new payroll and benefits system". Could anything be more standard? In other words, I think this system has already been written...hundreds and hundreds of times, if not thousands. No need to spend even ONE million dollars on the software part of it (which should be all that is needed), let alone $81.4 million!!!
Makes me think that UW System Senior Vice President Tom Anderes is either incredibly naive, or related to some decision maker. Or both. And I assume he has already made his money off this if he is willing to accept responsibility for the project's failure.

My brother worked for the UW during and after his college years. He quit and sought employment elsewhere over this computer program system. Basically saying "it was somebody's baby and they pushed for it". Of course I don't know or understand all the particulars, but he knew from the start that this wasn't going to work and the "powers that be" refused to listen to those who knew what they were talking about!

What a rip off, these guys snow the administration, I programed computers for years, large corp. We have talent right here in Janesville that could have done that job for less that half of what they are charging.

Apparently the UW has deep pockets and does not have to worry about costs and whether something actually works.

Do Any of you even understand what the cost of a "Payroll and Benefit" system cost.. It sure doesn't cost a Whopping 81.4 Million,, My wife's job was, (and is) to implement a payroll system for a local medical facility.. (plus it's entities) that's an estimated 6000 (+) employees and doctors....and their system did not even come close to the "Multi Millions of Dollars" that the UW is spending.. It's no wonder that Tuition is on the rise in Wisconsin... This kind of spending is as bad as the federal and state gov't..
The sad thing about this,, The UW came to my wife's employment to "Tour" the payroll system.. What a waste of time for my wife..

Now it's $81.4 million? He shouldn't say his job may be on the line, someone should tell him to clean out his desk.
