RHINELANDER, Wis. (AP) — Enemy forces attacked a vehicle with a rocket-propelled grenade in Afghanistan, killing a 26-year-old soldier and injuring seven others from the Wisconsin Army National Guard, the military said in a statement Saturday.

Sgt. Ryan C. Adams, of Rhinelander, died Friday in Logar province, according to the guard. The names and conditions of those injured haven’t been released.

Adams, assigned to the 91st Engineer Company, was on his second tour when he was killed. He was deployed with his unit in Iraq from May 2003 to April 2004.

He was a 2001 graduate of Rhinelander High School, where he played football, golf and baseball, The Daily News in Rhinelander reported. School staff members said Friday that Adams was a hard worker who was respectful and always had time for people.

Adams was among about 100 soldiers based in Rhinelander and Tomahawk who deployed in November to Camp Shelby before reporting to Afghanistan. They were conducting route clearance operations for the Army’s 101st Airborne Division.

Brigadier General Donald P. Dunbar ordered flags at all Wisconsin National Guard armories, air bases and other facilities lowered to half-staff starting Sunday. It was to continue until sunset on the day of Adams’ funeral, which has not been scheduled.
