KENOSHA — A greyhound adoption group wants to silence rumors that hundreds of dogs could be put to sleep when Dairyland Greyhound Park in Kenosha closes.

Ellen Paulus heads the state chapter of Greyhound Pets of America. She told Wisconsin Public Radio that a message being circulated through e-mail and Facebook is not true. It claims 900 greyhounds could be killed if they’re not adopted by the end of the year.

Paulus said she has spent hours responding to questions about the rumor. She estimates there may be 200 to 300 dogs available, and her group will help Dairyland relocate the dogs once the track closes at the end of the year.

Paulus said the time she’s spent dealing with the rumor could have been devoted to networking on behalf of the dogs looking for new homes.

Just start reading Sarah Palin's "Going Rogue" to them. That'll put them down, but there are more humane ways of doing it.

See, it is true, the death panels have already started making decisions.

We have family friends involved in the greyhound rescue network. They have permanent pets as well as rescue dogs that they foster until they are acclimated to domestic life (from kennel/racetrack life, which is quite different -- no sofas to worry about jumping on, you can pee practically anywhere, etc.). They've even taken in dogs flown up from Florida as in this story:

.
I'm sure the people spreading this rumor mean well -- they don't want the dogs to be put down and of course that was a common outcome in the past. But the dogs still need homes and in the recession abandonments have increased and adoptions have declined. So consider helping if you can. They're very sweet and devoted, but they are athletic and rambunctious, so not for everyone.

this was spreading on facebook as well. a quick google search (a few weeks ago mind you) took you to the kenosha greyhound site where they stated they NEVER put the dogs down -- and - THAT THE SHELTER FOR THESE DOGS WILL STAY OPEN AS LONG AS THERE ARE DOGS TO ADOPT OUT.
amazing how quickly these rumors spread and then for how long they stay in circulation.

As soon as I saw the post I knew it wasn't true. The dogs need to be trained to living in a house, socialization with people, etc.

What about the other 600 to 700 dogs in the rumor? ;-)
