BELOIT, Wis. (AP) — Police in Beloit are investigating three unrelated shootings that occurred over three days, including a homicide.

Police on Friday were still searching for a suspect in Tuesday’s homicide near Merrill Elementary School. The victim, 22-year-old Derick Kimber of Beloit, was shot while driving a rented car. His passenger was also shot and wounded.

Another man was hospitalized after a shooting Wednesday on the 300 block of Euclid Avenue. Police said that was apparently drug-related.

Thursday’s shooting apparently was gang-related. One man was hospitalized after a house on the 1500 block of Moore Street was shot at several times from a passing vehicle.

Police Capt. William Tyler said three shootings in three days is not normal for Beloit.

for your information,by listening to a police scanner, all the vehicles involved in these 3 incidences were from Chicago. So where does that leave your thinking that Beloit is such a bad place.

I also live in Beloit and I know there are problems in this city but we are also working with the police and others to make our neighborhood and community better. Kudos to Proud Beloit Teacher for not only teaching our children but also trying to make a difference in the community! Vatoloco do you have any good suggestions or do you prefer to make snide comments? I can see we still have the regular "arm chair quarterbacks" when it comes to solving these issues. I as do alot of others prefer to actually get involved to try to make a change. I realize I will be opening myself up to the nasty comments from those that dont agree but I hope that those people instead look to also get involved and try to make a difference!

Don't forget this stat on police. Janesville has a population of appr. 62,000 and has 103 officers on the street. Beloit has a population of appr 34,000 and has 77.

SarahB1-Here are the crime indexes per 100,000 (pop.) for a few years, Janesville vs Beloit from the Wisconsin Office Of Justice Assistance
-
1969-Janesville=561-Beloit=903
-
1975-Janesville=1428.0-Beloit=2101.2
-
1979-Janesville=5525.6-Beloit=6908.0
-
Janesville and Beloit have a comparable amount of crime, but Beloit has a smaller population and therefore a worse crime index (most years). Also on that note, Beloits population seems to stay very flat (no major changes in total amount).

"After three job offers in wealthier places, I decided the rich cultural diversity far outweighed the benefits of teaching in a district with a higher socioeconomic status"

Or, a better bet to forgive your student loans by working in a school district that is considered a poverty district.

Many of these comments are hard to read; the prejudice amazes me. There are MANY of us who choose to live and work in Beloit. After three job offers in wealthier places, I decided the rich cultural diversity far outweighed the benefits of teaching in a district with a higher socioeconomic status. The shootings break our hearts and sadden us deeply. They showcase a legitimate and scary reality; the questions my students will raise on Monday are not “business as usual” for any teacher. I pray each day that my kids won’t end up on the scary side of the statistics.

That said, "statistics" leave a lot unsaid about living in Beloit. We are surrounded in our neighborhoods by people who care about each-other. I bought a house on the ‘scary’ west-side and I couldn’t be happier. I can’t begin to describe how much I adore the hardworking, helpful, genuine people who live around me. Get past the outward appearance of the graffiti strewn allies, and you’ll find interesting, loving, compassionate people. We are as frustrated as the rest with the increasing gang activity, but we know our community is one worth fighting for. It is time to pull together, and “hug-a-thug” (along with some counseling, tutoring, and a healthy dose of strict limit-setting that all kids crave). Lots of people whine about the problems. I’m part of the solution (and I’m one of MANY who can say that).

Bellagio says "May they continue to shoot and murder in their owl (own) little cesspool of a town." Just think about his statement in case you missed it earlier. Maybe he could specify if he wishes me dead as a Beloiter-by-choice? Happy Thanksgiving, no matter where you live.

This is NOT new to Beloit. I grew up in the 60's/70's in Rockford and my parents always avoided Beloit. The city has always had "issues".
I don't know why people seem so surprised.

A depressed economy, generational families of dysfunction and lack of resources. 50 plus years of action and reaction... some things never change.

One part of Beloit?
The death happened on the east side, and the other 2 shootings happened on the west side in 2 completely different neighborhoods.

Thank you, vatoloco, for showing how institutionalized racism is (unfortunately) alive and well. Do a bit of reading on critical race theory and step outside your bubble of white privilege. From what I read on these comments, many of you could stand do that.

These shooters don't know and don't care about left-wing politics, they are self serving, unthinking individuals with a propensity for violence.

What was I trying to point out in the previous post?

According to the left, failure and inequality of blacks and Hispanics in America is the fault of society (racism), not their own actions or an act of Nature. Charges of racism are merely part of a concerted effort by the far-left to destroy society and gain a useful political tool.

Some African African folks argue that they are not afforded the same job opportunities as whites or others so they turn to drugs, gangs, and violence because the white man has them so oppressed. The left capitilazies on this and uses it to push their agenda of racism. Thier message is that minorities fail because of racism and not because of thier own actions.

"To quote Charles Murray, Inequality is too often seen as something that results from defects in society that can be fixed by a more robust economy, more active social programmes, or better schools. It is just not so. The effects of inequality cannot be significantly reduced, let alone quelled, unless the government embarks on a compulsory redistribution of wealth that raises taxes astronomically and strictly controls personal enterprise. Some will call this social justice. Others will call it tyranny. I side with the latter, but whichever position one takes, it is time to stop pretending that, without such massive compulsion, human beings in a fair and prosperous society will ever be much more equal than they are now. This is what the left believes in to begin with, so it's no surprise this lie about white racism causes black/Hispanic failure is so attractive to them. It's inequality as a weapon to control society they seek, not to help anyone black or otherwise. It's time to oppose all racism and hold individuals alone as responsible for their actions and failures."
