COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Authorities in Ohio say a turkey fryer caused a house to catch fire as the homeowner was preparing a Thanksgiving meal.

Columbus firefighters say no one was injured in the fire Thursday. They contained it to the back of the two-story house.

The turkey fryer was set up outside near the back door. Capt. Mike Zuber said a propane tank had a worn hose that caused a gas leak, sparking the blaze.

The fire spread to a nearby wood pile and a pickup truck.

The homeowner’s identity wasn’t immediately released. Zuber says one other family member was home at the time.

Damage was estimated at $15,000.

Hey, Gazette, a house burned to the ground in the Town of Darien on Thanksgiving night. Why is this small Ohio fire more important than that?

gixxer - Maybe he was trying to audition to play the part in that commercial where the dude put a frozen turkey in the oil. He blew half of his beard off. I can't remember what the commercial was for though.

However, there's a lot more oil (grease) with a fryer.

That can happen with a gas grill too.

We need a public service announcement about the safe use of turkey basters.

I do realize it says a gas leak caused the fire, but since when has gas caused a "spark"? And since when has gas simply caught fire and not exploded in a fiery mess? Dude was an idiot and doesn't want anyone to know. I respect that.

Here's some local news:

Because of the above story, Janesvillers have exercised great care with their turkey fryers.

Lol happens every year. Simple science....two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time. Ergo.....don't fill the oil full to the top! DUH! =)

Rodenator looks like fun, but when a gopher burrowed into the basement I used a twine snare, it took a few tries, but I finally got him at his entrance.

When local matters to you. Give me a break. It would be news if it happened in rock, green, walworth or dane county. That it happened in Ohio, surely there are better uses of ink and newsprint than to bore us with a story that means nothing to our area.

agree with johndoe. can't really tell what was the cause.
additionally, this is one fire, relatively small, in COLUMBUS, OHIO.
other than the few people who were affected (in columbus, oh), who cares.

So...was it the turkey fryer that actually CAUSED the fire? Or was it the "worn hose that caused a gas leak, sparking the blaze"?
