They don't deserve our beer: Spotted Cow confiscated in NYC

MADISON, Wis. — A New York City bar could get in trouble for allegedly selling a Wisconsin beer. New York State Liquor Authority says its investigators confiscated 50 cases of Spotted Cow from the Mad River Bar & Grille in Manhattan Nov. 6.

The beer is brewed by New Glarus Brewing Co. in Green County. Brewmaster Dan Carey says the beer is not licensed for sale outside Wisconsin.

Liquor authority spokesman William Crowley tells the Wisconsin State Journal that businesses selling alcohol in New York need to purchase their alcohol through a wholesale distributor.

He says the bar could have its liquor license revoked for selling the beer and for not paying the appropriate taxes.

The bar, owned by Michael Mastellone, didn’t immediately return a call and e-mail Wednesday.

An opinion is pathetic when you call Spotted Cow "fruity tasting water", or "beer for people who don't like the taste of beer". Kool Aid is fruity tasting water.

Spotted Cow is one of the best examples of a cream ale available. It's popular because it makes a great session and gateway beer.

since when is it pathetic to have your own opinion?

I'm not a beer snob at all. I'm just saying that if I'm going to pay 7 bucks a six pack for something (like spotted cow is), I'd prefer it taste like beer. I like Sam Adams, for local brews, Sprecher and Tyranena are the best in my opinion. I also have no problems drinking a Miller High Life, or anything for that matter as long as it's cheap. Spotted Cow is fruity tasting water. If you like that you can get some Coors Light or Keystone Light.

OkieFed is a beer snob of the worst kind. I bet s/he used to drink the light tasting stuff at one time, like most beer drinkers do. Pathetic.

If my water tasted like beer, I think I would be getting a purifier or filter of some sort. Or else bottling and selling it.

Gray's Wisco Wheat is pretty good. But, I like Speckled Bovine and Totally Naked, too. Has anyone tried Shiner Bock from Texas...mmmmm! Or Negra Modelo...or Hacker Pschorr...or...well, I could go on all day. Badger Spirits in Beloit has mix and match six packs which is nice for trying one bottle of something without buying a whole six pack and then finding out you don't like it.

This is pretty bad when we have free trade with so many countries and cant even send stuff across state lines.

I'd have a 2 day hangover from Old Mil too. However, I know there are people out there who like Old Red and Old Blue. Just not my choice.

It's funny how people get so defensive about Spotted Cow. Let's face it, it tastes like water, with perhaps a little orange or lemon squeezed in. It's "easy" to drink - beer for people who don't like the taste of beer. If I wanted to drink water masquerading as beer, I'd get a case of Coors Light...much cheaper and probably almost as strong. There are many microbrews in the state, including some made right in Janesville that are hands down better than Spotted Cow, if you like beer that is.

As long as I'm paying for the beer, as long as the company got paid for it along the way, wherever it was bought, I'm ok with it. What do we have, the beer police running around? Unless the beer was stolen, lighten up.As long as someone bought it fair and square at some point, and the brewery got their cut-that's all I'm concerned with. Sounds like uncle sam just wants to make sure he's getting his taxes payed. Come on, It's not the prohibition.

I'm a dark, full bodied beer drinker, and my general rule of thumb is "If I can't see through it, or I can chew it, I'll probably like it"
With that said, I don't makefun of 99% of the other guys I see drinking that (my opinion) watered down, no-tasting crap like miller light, bud light, or even weiser. I just choose not to drink it, I don't openly knock it. To each their own, I say. It's America. Quit fighting with your neighbors!!The beauty of beer is there is a style for everyone. Dark, amber, ale, hoppy, stouty, strong, watered down(miller/bud/majority of "american" beers drank regularly) Don't think just because your beer isn't a "woman's" beer(wine coolers is all I'd call that) that you should make fun of someone else for their style. What is with these posts lately? Do you all forget we are brothers and sisters in the end? It's annoying to see these little jabs at each other because you apparently don't have anything better to do than to hae a spat with your neighbors. Just because someone's style or taste is different, doesn't mean it's wrong. Lighten up people, enjoy diversity, don't let it highlight your insecurity!

Quite the contrary, spotted cow is a great beer, the women are the ones who drink those "light" beers.

I'll have to make another run back to Glarnerstube and be back by 12/05... in time for the Rainbow kick-off.

Didn't take long for the grammar police to pounce on this one. Don't they have anything better to do than to work as unpaid editors for the Gazette? I guess they need to prove their intelligence.

By the way, Spotted Cow is a "beer" for girls and wine drinkers. That's probably why it is so popular in Madison.

Not probable.

Wonder if any Wisconsin "jerks" would turn in someone in Madtown illegally selling Hudson River Amber Bock (and skirting the taxes we Wisconsinites so generously fork over) just to help the NY connection?

Too bad, I've been there many times. It's the headquarters for the Big Apple Badgers, UW Alumni in NYC. On game days, they put up a big bucky, sell brats, cheese curds and spotted cow and play all the band songs at allt he right times! Hope they are allowed to continue...best pace to see a game outside of Randall.
