Longer shipping season expected on Mississippi
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Grain shipments are behind schedule on the Upper Mississippi River due to this fall’s wet harvest.
Kent Pehler, of Brennan Marine in La Crosse, says grain shipments were off about 50 percent in mid-October. The company provides services to barge lines in the port of La Crosse.
The soybean harvest is over, but farmers just started the corn harvest this month. He says the first half of November has been strong, but it hasn’t made up for lost volume.
Ron Johnson, with the Duluth Seaway Port Authority, says grain shipments are up almost 28 percent in the port of Superior over last year.
Johnson says the seaway locks won’t close until Dec. 29. Pehler expects to see some limited grain loading until the river locks close for maintenance Dec. 7.
