From the WCLO newsroom:

The Rock County Sheriff's Office is reporting a single vehicle fatal accident on Old Highway 59 just north of the new Highway 59 bypass.

Deputies arrived at the scene around 6:30 and found a car collided with a parked caterpillar front-end-loader.

The driver, identified as 40-year-old Reyna Portugal of Janesville, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies investigating the accident say it appears Portugal failed to negotiate a curve in the road, left the roadway and struck the front-end-loader. Unreasonable and imprudent speed and wet road conditions were contributing factors in the crash.

My condolences. I drive on the new bypass every day back and forth to work. If someone who had driven on 59 before hadn't known about the new bypass construction, I could see how something like this could've happened. There are signs all over the place near the roundabouts, but nothing where old 59 used to be.

The last time I went through the High St./Hwy. 26 intersection (lights), there was a "ROAD CLOSED AHEAD 1 1/4 MILES" sign (barricade). I thought they wanted people to be on the new part now. (?)

I never said it was close to a yield sign.

There should be a guard rail or something placed on that curve ! It should have saved a life last night . It did not happen close to a yeild sign .

My thoughts go out to this family. While some streets may not be constructed perfectly (Milton Ave intersections for example), drivers are ultimately responsible for their own driving skills. My husband and I were out last night in the rain and we slowed down. That's the key. I have honestly lost track of the amount of times that people (both kids and adults) have driven irresponsibly in rainy and snowy weather. In drivers ed (atleast 10 years ago when I was in it) we were told to slow down. If it's raining, drop your speed by 5 or as necessary to drive safely. If a driver can't do that, then it's a shame for them and their family when they get a call like this.

I have been out there and it is designed quite well. A couple points that I would like to make. 1. This accident did not happen on the new part it was on the old part of the road, and due to speed and failure to navigate a curve. 2. The only issue that I have found on this stretch of road is an issue that I have found in many places near Janesville, and that is that people do not seem to know what a yield sign is. Seven times out of ten if I am following someone and they come to a yield sign they either stop or slow down to five miles an hour. That is not what a yield sign means it means turn your head and look to see if there is traffic where you plan on merging if there is not keep going at the same speed if there is adjust your speed to properly merge. The only flaw in the design of the bypass is that the designers hoped that people would be smart enough to understand what yield means, unfortunately they were wrong. This accident is a horrible tragedy however it was not due to the design of the road it was due to rain and speed and a curve. My prayers are with this family in their time of need.

with all do respect to the family! i do have to say.. i drive 59 very often and if she was not familer with the the bypass being ready and the fact that there is no signs that say u must go up the curve and the road is closed... its just a sad situation.. i knew the bypass was ready a week ago when they opened it, but i went to jvl sat night in the dark and its hard to see where the curve is... im sure speed and all that have something to do with it also, but the fact that there is NO signs stating there is a curve in the road or the road going forward is torn up...

This isn't about the new bypass. Save that for another time. Somebody has lost thier life and hearts are broken. Stay on subject please..Regardless of fault a family won't have that loved one to enjoy anymore. To the family please accept my condolences and do the best you can to get through this tough time..

Don't know why mine was posted twice? your right localboy It"s all in the driver but you know as well as I it's GETTING worse! look at the good old days we had drivers ed in school ,now you pay a driving school huge dollars and I believe they dont teach solid defensive and offensive driving skills just the basics I deal with them every day it is scary as hell.

Thoughts, condolences, prayers, etc.

But to blame it on the road design without knowing any more about it than you do from the information released in this article?! How many drivers have passed by that area lately without running off the road into a bulldozer?

Might speed, lack of attention and control, and perhaps some as yet unreported factors have contributed to this accident? Nope--you want to jump to the conclusion that it was "crop circles" (i.e. roundabouts), or maybe that bad Milton juju!

Hey, wait--maybe the bypass and roundabouts are some sort of intelligence or performance test devised and implemented by aliens (you know, like Jim Doyle)! Yeah, that's it!

I drive a commercial vehicle for a living and in my opinion the Janesville area has the worst drivers I have ever encountered ,then add poorly designed intersections it's a bad combo have you ever tried to turn south on CNTY RD D off of the 11 bypass the fence is obstructing your view and the curve to the north peaks 80 yard from the intersection and of course most vehicles are traveling @55 to 65 mph it's a bomb ready to go off, I could go on and on and on Happy T day to all and be safe!!!

LOVEISGOOD - no I haven't. However, I have been driving for a LONG time, and I have yet to meet a road design that I couldn't conquer. This includes at one time, driving for a living 10 - 12 hours a day in all weather, all traffic, and all situations. It is just that some people make driving look real difficult. Having said that, the fact is somebody is dead and we can't change that. The road is not to blame, or all people who drive on it would be dead.

Road designs are not responsible for crashes. Poor driving is. My hope is his family finds peace this week as they will be going through a difficult time...
