JANESVILLE -- The Rock County sheriff’s deputy accused of sexually assaulting a teen at a Halloween party has resigned.

Steven L. Stenulson was asked to resign in the midst of allegations he sexually assaulted an 18-year-girl Nov. 1 at a party in Milton, Sheriff Bob Spoden said. The party included underage drinking.

Stenulson resigned Wednesday, Nov. 18, and the sheriff’s office’s internal investigation ended, Spoden said. Stenulson could have been disciplined or fired as a result of the internal investigation.

Stenulson was arrested Monday, Nov. 2, after the teen told police she awoke from a nap at a Halloween party and found an off-duty deputy assaulting her, according to the criminal complaint. The two know each other.

Stenulson was charged with second-degree sexual assault, a felony that involves sexual contact with someone not capable of giving consent or who is under the influence of alcohol.

He would not have had to resign if he was innocent of said charges. Obviously they have enough evidence to be able to terminate him. They must have enough to convict him.

On Channel 3 this morning, they are reporting that the Sheriff asked him to resign or face termination.

Let us all just be thankful in the fact that he will no longer be employed by the sheriffs department. On the bright side for him, now he can go to all the parties with under age drinkers that he wants and not have to worry about losing his job over it.

No questions. My original statement proves to be correct.
"Sure he will, he RESIGNED and is NO LONGER a Law Enforcement officer so convicted or not he WILL get his retirement that he earned to this point."

ljs64...."Anymore more questions? I thought not."

A little pompous are we?

If you would have read...and comprehended what I wrote, you would have realized that I immediately corrected to whom my post was intended...snarly.

I was asking him to cite his source relating to his assertion of loss of retirement benefits upon conviction. So, yes, that still stands.

And, you did not cite the complete information regarding early termination....FYI...

"What happens if I terminate employment before my earliest retirement age? Do I have to withdraw my retirement account?

No, you do not need to withdraw your account. If you terminate employment before age 55 (age 50 for participants with protective category service) you can either take a separation benefit, a lump sum refund of contributions plus interest, or wait until you reach age 55 (50) or later and apply for a retirement benefit, which is based on both employer and employee contributions."

Any questions?

Separation Benefit: If you terminate employment and apply for a benefit before age 55 (50 for participants with some protective category service) you will receive a separation benefit. A separation benefit is a lump sum payment of your employee required contributions plus accrued interest. If you are not vested in the WRS a separation benefit is payable regardless of your age.

Benefit Eligibility

You are eligible for a separation benefit if you are terminated (i.e., your employer has reported a termination date to the Department) from all WRS covered employment with all WRS participating employers and you are:

Under age 55 (under age 50 for participants with protective category service); or
Age 55 or older (age 50 or older for participants with protective category service), and you began covered WRS employment after 1989, terminated employment before April 24, 1998, and have service in less than five calendar years on your WRS termination date.

Sorry snarly..that was ljs64...BUT...your' point is that he won't get his retirement UNLESS he takes it in a lump sum payout.

Please cite the statute you are basing this on.

Good cops bad cops it's been going on forever but he has not been proven guilty by a jury of his peers, regardless if he is guilty or not he chose to be at that party and should have left knowing that there was underage drinking involved or done something about it

Sorry but because he resigned. He can take a lump sum of his retirement right now and get what he has earned to date. That is how WRP is set up if he doesn't and is convicted of a felony then he would lose it but my bet is he took the payout already. Look guilty or not guilty still has to be proven yet. Yes resigning sure looks bad.

I believe in Innocent UNTIL proven guilty.

Mr. Stenulson has NOT been found guilty of ANYTHING as it relates to this case as of today. All you dimestore lawyers and K-Mart cops think what is printed in the newspapers or posted online is the entire fact of a case. Please go shopping and buy a clue.
