Westbound traffic on Interstate 90/39 was detoured through Janesville for several hours Tuesday night due to an accident near Newville.

Police and paramedics from Edgerton and Janesville were called to a multi-vehicle accident at mile marker 165 at 7:56 p.m.

Traffic was backed up in both directions, and the detour began at about 8:20 p.m. In order to keep traffic moving through Janesville, police officers were not allowing vehicles to turn south on to Milton Avenue from Highway 14.

One westbound lane was opened at about 10:50 p.m.
