BELOIT – Police are asking for residents’ help after a 22-year-old man died in a shooting near Merrill Elementary School on Tuesday.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired at 12:57 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Porter Avenue and Randall Street. Seconds later, there was a report of a vehicle involved in a parking lot crash near Porter and Copeland Avenue, according to a police news release.

The car crashed in the parking lot of Merrill Elementary School with the 22-year-old victim inside, police said. The school was immediately locked down. The lockdown has since been lifted.

“A second person was transported from the area of Porter and Randall to the Beloit Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds,” the news release states. “… The connection between the person in the vehicle and the pedestrian is not known.”

Anyone with information may call the Beloit Police Department Detective Bureau at (608) 364-6800 or Crime Stoppers at 362-7463.

Unfortunately the "no snitch" code is all over the world. Its sad. But what's even more sad is that when someone in a gang is shot...fellow gang members still won't cooperate with police. There is no stopping it. Until more details come out we cant say this incident was gang related. (we all know it was) This whole thing makes me sick

janesvillian GMAD was a big part of Janesville and the less fortunate are feeling their closing. Sometimes you amaze me with all the answers you have to everything in here.IMO you must live on here surfing for quotes, laws, or articles to post in here to justify your comments. And this is not an article about GM it is about the death of a young man that they need help with. The surviving victim knows who it is and to fail to tell because of fear is BS as maybe next time he wont survive and there will be a next time for him as they dont need a witness. it isnt about fear it is about "the so called street code of not snitching no matter what" well to sit and say nothing of what they see will get them the death penalty as the threat of the witness talking and the best way to ease the threat is to get rid of it. So talk to your kids that it is ok to tell if someone will get hurt, injured or killed It all starts with us as parents teaching right and wrong and instilling that teaching and also reminding them that things like this do happen to them, and eventually can. Talk till your blue in the face but do something as someday this may be your kid they are writing about. And as a parent of kids that have refused to "snitch" I fear everyday that I will get that call and that is reality. Once they reached adulthood I became powerless over what they chose for themselves.

Unfortunately, gang-related murders usually go unsolved. I don't know if this latest killing is in that category, but most of this year's five murders in Beloit were. Now, Janesville, also has murders, but they seem to be tied to domestic violence with the murderer often killing himself after doing in his significant other. Children are also in close proximity to many of these killings. It reminds me of child sexual assault vs. incest. In the cases of domestic violence and incest (vs. murder or stranger sexual assault), people tend to forget that the innocent victim (incest) or potential victim (family violence) is almost always a child.

The problems of Beloit can not be blamed on the police dept. They are just as frustrated about the crime and murders there as the next person. You forget that many of these same officers investigating these crimes live in this city and have children who attend the schools here. The police cannot make witnesses tell them what happened. Just a little something for you "poster" out there to think about, these same witnesses are hiding these murderers, lying for them and cleaning up after them. With odds like that, I am glad I am not a Beloit Police Officer.

I have lived in Beloit and currently teach in Beloit. We have major issues and anyone who denies that is lying to themselves. Gangs are a HUGE problem and it is beginning to creep into the middle school. Unfortunately, the BPD turns a blind eye to the problem until murders like this occur (and usually go unsolved).

I wish more people would speak up about the things that go on down there! I can understand though. But what we have to realize is that this shooting took place by a school, and these wanna be "playas" think that they can do what they want, and if the police keep letting them, this will be a continuing cycle of violence! Come on.....how many more have to die.....well, I guess I understated that word
"DIE"...I should have said...murder. What will it take for people to stand up and put these people behind bars? I hope that whoever lives near this area will take note that it could have been an innocent kid at Merrill school that lost his/her life because os senseless violence. He may not have been an elementary child from Merrill, but please understand, that he was somebody's child.

I never said Janesville was a Utopia, we have plenty of crime here too. Just Beloit seems to see more violent drug/gang crime than we do. Ours is more property motivated than anything else. Sorry I am from Beloit and hate it, I can form that opinion on 18+ plus years there.

Not Flint again. Do you know how many people lost GM jobs in Flint? 75,000. Seventy-five THOUSAND. It had to be an average of more than one GM employee for every household in the city. Janesville was never that dependent on GM and certainly not recently.

Dear Childcareteach, I am so sorry that you had such a horrible and frightening experience in the JANESVILLE parking lot! Nobody should be treated like that, ever!!! What several of these "writers" refuse to or are unable to understand is that Janesville has bad things happen, too! These people just choose to ignore the problems that exist in Janesville because it is easier to pick on others than to actually go to work and try to improve things at home. Beloit, as a city, is far more open and honest about it's problems! If, Janesville was perfect, we wouldn't have horrible, hateful people running around threatening lives and yelling racist words at people.
Wouldn't it be nice if the negative bloggers would simply go and do something constructive and positive with their lives ....like volunteering to help others in need.

Nice Bellagio/localboy.....The wonderful city of Janesville has lost it's largest industry with that several large companies that fueled that company. There is no sign of any industry with a desire to relocate/startup in Janesville on the horizon either. As soon as those unemployment checks run out and those who were used to living on wages they will not possibly see again in this lifetime--definitely not if they stay in that dying city--are going to have serious trouble making their house/auto payments. Look and see what happened to Flint when GM walked away from that town......It will be similar to Flint, but with a nice ice rink......Good luck Janesville--you're going to need it.....:)

The pedestrian was the shooter. I know the young man that was the victem in this shooting as well as the the other injured person. They have children like you and I. They, just like everyone else, don't deserve to die at the receiving end of a bullet! I agree with a comment that someone else left, and that it said that the same people are getting away with murder! But the people that know them are too scared to point the finger because they fear their life. Beoit police need to get a hand on the crime that is happening down there and start doing something about the ones that they know are doing the shooting and find a way to keep them in jail! Solve some of the unsolved murders that have happened in the past years! Either the detectives are contaminating the scenes, or they are just waiting for the "BIG DOGS" in hopes to try and fry bigger fish! WTF? Sorry if I have offended anyone...this post was not meant to do that, but Beloit isn't a bad place to live, but until I feel protected and feel that my children would be safe, then it will remain only a 10 minute drive!

Have you forgotten the Janesville April 2009 killing of a mother in front of her child?
Everyone has their opinion's & you're entitled to them.
Let's agree to disagree. There will alway's be people that dislike Beloit or Janesville for whatever reason.

Look Beloit has neighborhoods where crime is high, I do not deny that! Most cities do. However, to say that the city as a whole is bad is just ignorant! I do not plan on spending my life in this city for two reasons, lack of opportunity and lack of jobs. Not crime. I go to school in Janesville and it never fails that as soon as a new class starts and we tell where we live, as soon as I say Beloit there is some idiot who makes dumb comments like "Oh my god how can you live there" I think the problem is that the same people are getting away with murder here. So, we have crazy killers running around scott free to do whatever time and time again! Only a few people have been caught over the years. Beloit has a very large number of unsolved murders and that does not sit well with me! No one ever gets caught. It is time rock county invest tax dollars in solving crimes not just finding out where shots have been fired! It makes no sense. I will never "get used to this" becaus this is not acceptable, it's sad!

Oh great...another story that the Beloit haters from Janesville can rip on Beloit. Yes, I know about the crime that happens...but this could have taken place in Janesville just as easy. So the next time (and there will be a next time) when something like this happens in Janesville, what will you all say?? (Usually nothing) This is a sad case when someone dies..don't need to throw insults. There are places that I won't go in Beloit...just like in Janesville...just like Madison...just like Milwaukee...etc. Some people just need to cut something down to make themselves feel better...how sad!

Ignorance is bliss I suppose. Beloit and the high and lofty Janesville are less than 10 miles apart. Do do you really think it's that different? You guys don't get around much I take it?

Somebody lost a family member today, don't make it worse than it already is.

Childcareteach: I agree with you but also know that most of those posting these comments take every opportunity they can to criticize Beloit. I grew up in Beloit, still consider it "home" and love it with all my heart. By the way, has anyone got any further information on the female student being stabbed at one of the Janesville high schools on Monday? It was mentioned in another blog.

I am from Beloit and am glad I moved away from that hell hole long ago. It was bad when I was in High School, one guy I went to school with beat a business man over the head with a hammer during a robbery, another person I went to school with walked up and shot a guy dead through the head in front of a bar that no longer exists because of crap like that. I did not get that far away but far enough. Sorry if you take offense but Porter and Randall is "gang central", as is switchtrack alley, most of Wisconsin Ave, Harrison, Keeler, Central, etc.

Yes, it is sad that someone was killed in a senseless shooting in Beloit. That doesn't change the fact that Beloit is known for being an area where there are shady happenings, people get shot or shot at and gangsters seem to do whatever they want. Most of us are aware of the "Beloit stigma" and do our best to not become a part of it. Again, it's too bad someone got killed, but it doesn't change the fact that Beloit is less-safe than many of the surrounding areas.

So why did Beloit spend so much of your tax payers money to install a gunshot detector? because there is a problem!there are problems in every city but Beloit has a SERIOUS problem. It is a damn shame that there was a life lost but! he probably was involved in something he should have not been and knew there was a risk of severe danger, you play with fire you get burned! my thoughts and prayers to the family

I am so sick and tired of the city that I live in being labeled as bad! This is horrible and no one thinks about those of us who have lived here all our lives! How about the fact that most of our violent crime comes form residents who have moved from other cities to Beloit. How about the neighborhoods that are mostly crime free? How about the fact that in the parking lot of a Janesville hospital less than a week ago, I was called the "n" word and told to die! Even though I was visibly pregnant and alone! I think that there is crime everywhere. Wether it is hate crime or violent crime, it exists. Lets stop assuming that since this occurred in Beloit it is expected. Lets look at the fact that children had to be afraid in a place where they are susposed to be safe. That young man was someone's son and now he is gone forever. Regardless of where this happened, a life is lost. These crimes will continue as long as there is a stigma on Beloit. Because if people keep labeling us as a viloent city then violent people will keep doing violent things. Lets start saying it is not okay and it will not be accepted! For those Janesville residents who are afraid of Beloit, just know this and all other incidents were isolated, and the life long residents of Beloit are not bad people. Fear is not the answer.

No idea why Napalm is trolling with unnecessary comparisons. Janesville has higher property crime, and Beloit has higher violent crime -- and this has been true for quite some time.
.
Not sure why the Gazette didn't just republish the other article with an UPDATED hed, though.
.
I believe the pedestrian would be classified at this time as a "person of interest", i.e. not enough information yet to call them a suspect, but probably a material witness.
