Proposal would name official Wis. motorcycle

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson would become the official Wisconsin motorcycle under a bill proposed in the Legislature.

Milwaukee Democratic Rep. Leon Young says the idea came from a family member of Sgt. Jeremy Vrooman, who was killed last year while serving in Iraq.

Young argues in a letter to his colleagues that the long and storied history of Harley-Davidson in Wisconsin makes it appropriate to honor it with the distinction of being the official state motorcycle.

William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson built the first Harley-Davidson motorcycle in 1903 in Milwaukee. The company was incorporated four years later and remains based in Milwaukee.

Wisconsin doesn't have an official motorcycle, but it does have an official song, insect, dog, dance, and tartan.

This could be the perfect final nail in the coffin for WI- I'm sure that AFTER they waste all this time on this subject we (taxpayers) will get to pay HD for the trademark and copyright infringment everytime the logo is printed on anything and completely bust the state. I'm sure that Doyle could come up with a way to tax business' to pay for it though.

Is english listed as the official language of the state? That's something that should be done.

Sgt. Jeremy Vrooman, thank you for your service and the ultimate sacrifice that you made so that people in the good old U.S. of A. can express themselves in blogs like this one. I’m sorry that your idea has been met with such resistance and misdirected anger. Rest in peace Sgt. Jeremy Vrooman and once again, thank you.

although im not a Harley owner I still ride, and respect those that do own a Harley and I support this. However it should be the Motorcycle of the United states not just Wisconsin. It seems so many people are afraid to call anything American these days we dont want to offend the asians or the mexicans or anyone else Um except me I am an equal oppertunity offender I dont care about being politicaly correct cause it might offend you.

Did anyone happen to see the "South Park" episode a week or so ago where they ridiculed a bunch of guys on loud Harleys who ride into town and annoy everyone with their repeated noisy disruptions?
I agree with the comments that our state officials should concentrate on more important matters.

Don't they only make the big twin engines in Milwaukee? The engines then get shipped to York, PA to be installed into the rest of the cycle? They also have a Kansas City plant for the Sportsters. The last I heard, HD was going to shut down the York plant and maybe move it close to the KC plant. What's next? Moving the Milw production down there too? Maybe they can keep the offices up here though. Maybe we could have a museum to show people what products we used to make in this state.

In case you didn't read closely enough, this isn't about motorcycles. And no one here really cares about your opinion as to which one is best. It's about our legislators wasting the public's time and resources with blatant foolishness.

I dont think H-D will be "guilt-tripped" into doing anything. They will decide the future of the company in Wisconsin in accord with what they think is best for the company.

Anyway, why promote H-D's business interests because one of their motorcycles was a fallen soldier's favorite? Why not designate the Brunswick Black Beauty as the state's bowling ball because it was some other fallen soldier's favorite ball?
The whole thing has gotten silly and out of hand.

It's the least we can do considering we (Doyle) taxed hundreds of their workers out of jobs in this state. I'm sure this will make it right for them though.

Fascinating that not one comment poster finds empathy with this “State Motorcycle” scheme. In this cynical time, not even the insertion of the soldier’s family into the motive, has tugged at readers’ hearts.

Just a year ago, if this proposal had been served up, even as the General Motors collapse was imminent, I think I can safely say, at least half the postings would have been favorable. Yikes; cynicism has swept over us like a specter.

My take on the real motive for this cycle idea (actually, I would have thought the Harley already had some designated status): Harley is sending out not so subtle nuances that they are considering moving some or who can say these days, maybe the whole farm to some other venue. We can all use our imaginations from experience with this economy as to where they might go assuming it will not close totally. I suggest this designation scheme is a preemptive strike to guilt-trip Harley should they start the moving vans coming.

Isn't there more important things for the WI govt. to worry about??
Maybe they should have added in the story how some of the H-D manufacturing is moving OUT of WI or the fact that they discontinued manufacturing WI made Buell because it didn't make them enough money!

Given the current economic conditions in WI, we the people have decided that none of us can afford a motorcycle or a car, let alone insurance and gas for either of said vehicles. We therefore have decided to forgo naming a state motorcycle and have designated our new state vehicle as a bicycle.

Actually, "Spotted Cow" from the New Glarus Brewery would be a better choice for state beer. Besides, Miller's really isn't beer.

Wow, whatever Doyle has must be catching. While Rome, WI, burns, this legislature and the idiot-in-chief focus on everything but the issues.

What's next--official state snack food? Official WI welfare system out-of-staters (I bet I know the answer to that one too!)? Just another in the long line of reasons that it is more than apparent by the legislation they propose that we likely do not need a full-time, paid legislature--they do more harm than good!

janesvillecomments: You are absolutely correct. But the country needs a strong third party, a common sense party. As you stated ..."the two major political parties ...are corrupt and self-serving. Embarrassing, but fitting I guess. Having a machine "symbolize" our state--a machine that is stuck in the past, having evolved significantly less than it's counterparts, with no idea on which direction to take going in to the future......I would say it's an accurate representation:)

The state, like the country, needs to replace the two major political parties with new ones that aren't corrupt and self-serving. The Republicans and Democrats have become very comfortable with sharing power and ignoring their constituents.

Would it be to much to ask, that they start worrying about the next budget process and how to fix the problems they have made for all of Wisconsin the past few years. Stop taking from one account to pay for something else. Make the cuts that are needed and move on. We do have a choice in the next election, not one person should be re-elected, no matter what party.
