Terror suspects plan for Illinois worries Ryan

By GAZETTE STAFF   Wednesday, November 18, 2009 - 7:18 a.m.

Rep. Paul Ryan on Tuesday took a stand against a proposal to, as Ryan phrased it, “welcome detained terrorists to the Midwest.”

Ryan was referring to the Obama administration’s consideration of a northwestern Illinois prison to house prisoners when the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, prison closes.

In a news release, Ryan said his constituents would not welcome more than 100 of these prisoners so close to the Wisconsin border.

The prison is the Thomson Correctional Center, a high-security “supermax” facility in Thomson, Ill., about 115 miles from Janesville.

Closing GITMO and trying the inmates in U.S. courts is soclalist? By your logic, Bush was a socialist:

Wednesday, 21 June 2006, 20:46 GMT 21:46 UK
"US President George W Bush has said he would like to close the US prison camp at Guantanamo Bay and send many detainees back to their home countries.
However, he said not all the inmates would be returned - some would need to be put on trial in the US because they were "cold-blooded killers"."

Gray_Ghost and the rest of you narrow minded fools. I am glad Ryan has the courage to stand against the Socialist regime of Obama. Bringing terrorist to the United States is a mistake. They don't have rights, they don't deserve to be here. They are war criminals and deserve to be kept at Gitmo, where it is 100% safe from being a terrorist target. I am glad that he is looking out for the safety of this country. In 3 years Obama and AG Eric Holder should be put on trial for endangering and misleading this country.

Well, my grandparents live near Thomson. They thought it was ridiculous when the very large jail was built in the first place because it sat empty and a lot of money was spent on it. Can't wait to hear their opinion- they weren't fans of Obama from the time he ran for senator.

“It's absurd to think that a group of other terrorists would be able to bust-out their imprisoned cohorts from a military-controlled supermax prison.”

They don’t have to “bust-out” anybody, all they need to do is use the prisoners as a focal point for an attack. The point is not to have a successful prison break, but to give the U.S. another black eye. Just like 9-11, it wasn’t an attempt to achieve a military victory, just to embarrass the U.S. Having these war criminals on U.S. soil also provides a good recruiting tool to our home-grown jihadists. It allows them an accessible rallying point they can visit and see, rather than a far away, mythical place like GITMO.

But there is a big difference between 70% and 93%. Hmmmm... about 23%. I don't think Doyle has done much for our area, but I never said he had. Besides representing a district, congressmen also try to "get" things (projects, jobs, dollars) for their district. If Alaska can get a bridge to nowhere, why can't we at least get a bridge to somewhere? Ryan is all fluff and he continues to try to distract us, hoping that we won't notice.

Where does Ryan think the convicted terrorists should be incarcerated? Not in my backyard! Perhaps a Supermax prison in another state, but not within 112 miles of Janesville? Evidently Ryan does not have much faith in the governments ability to protect us from terrorist attack. This isn't about jobs, its about punishing those who seek to harm our citizens. Don't all citizens, then, bear the responsibility for making sure these criminals are jailed with the worst of the worst? Isn't that why Supermax prisions were built in the first place?

Northman, these terrorists are criminals, essentially like the hundreds of other terrorists who are in US prisons. It's wrong to give them the additional aura of being war criminals. They are not state-sponsored (at least not since the Taliban got booted). They are a multi-national criminal conspiracy.

It's absurd to think that a group of other terrorists would be able to bust-out their imprisoned cohorts from a military-controlled supermax prison.

It's shameful that Mr. Ryan and the Republican party insist on making a partisan issue out of this (and so many other issues that should be non-partisan in resolution).

The huge fallacy committed by the liberal folks here is in equating of these war criminals with plain old ordinary criminal criminals. Timothy McVeigh was a “terrorist”, these guys are “terrorists”, same thing right? Nope.

Putting aside the point of whether they belong in our criminal justice system, let’s just consider the danger of putting them into one of our prisons. McVeigh was pretty much a solo act; there weren’t a lot of people, here or in other countries, demanding his release. The Guantanamo kids, on the other hand, are considered to be heroes by thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of militant Muslims around the world. There was very little chance of any group attacking a prison, or adjacent area, to break out McVeigh. It might be a very tempting target for a group of Muslim terrorists.

Ryan isn’t “fear-mongering”, he’s using his head to try and anticipate a threat. Some of you should try using yours as well.

Mr. Ryan's comments against placing terrorists in the supermax prison at Thomsen, IL are transparently disingenuous. He's following the party line of contriving threats that are not real. In fact, what the Republicans are doing is stating that our country is too weak to secure nasty criminals, when the truth is we are better at incarcerating people than any other nation.

Mr. Ryan, I have had respect for your conservative fiscal position, though I disagree with much of it, but this fear mongering is too much. The very town of Thomson wants the prisoners held there.
