Wis. man's jail sentence for hanging dog upheld
WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) — A state appeals court says a one-year jail sentence is fair for an Outagamie County man who hung his dog from a garage rafter with its choke chain.
Eric Shattuck of Appleton was convicted of felony mistreatment of an animal in 2008 in a plea agreement that called for prosecutors to recommend six months in jail.
The 3rd District Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that Circuit Judge Mitchell Metropulos' decision to hand down a one-year sentence properly took into account the seriousness of the crime and the punishment was not shockingly excessive.
Court records say the 36-year-old Shattuck attempted to kill his dog Swiper in September 2007 by feeding it antifreeze but the dog refused to drink it. The records say that after the dog attempted to bite him, Shattuck got angry, took it to the garage and hung it.

Thank goodness we have "freeradical" out there to force us to "think outside the box" and "look at things from another view". Why without his input all of us lemmings would still be under the misguided belief that that freak hung his dog for the sheer pleasure of it. It's too bad the courts didn't have access to "freeradicals" brilliance when they were working out a plea bargain with the guy. Hmmm, plea bargain, that means they had additional charges against him that were dropped! Oh well, it sounds to me like a clear cut case of self-defense. The dog was probably still angry about the poisoning attempt back in 2007 and that's why he bit him. Talk about carrying a grudge, I'd hang him too.

Alright justaguy now you're making a liar out of me for saying something else. Seriously
What have you contributed about the story? You've bashed my opinions without presenting your own. This is what I am going to end talking to you with, please read.I already sent it to you, but maybe you didn't get it?
Just in case, please read this, and quit bashing me. These are supposed to be comments referring to the story, not just to try and badmouth someone behind your text like some sort of five year old on the telephone acting big.

I'd really appreciate it if you would keep personal opinion about ME to yourself, and focus at the topic at hand. I chose not to request removal of your comment bashing me, because I thought it would be nice for everyone to see. None of your thoughts on the story, just a poorly constructed sentence and thought about how you think I'm a moron. If you want to think I'm "stupid" that is fine, in fact I'm all for it! There's nothing illegal about opinions, that's why we're here. But we're here tovoice opinions on TOPICS not PEOPLE! The forums are for discussing the topics, not for trash talking or personal bashing. Thanks, have a great day!

Sometimes the way people treat their pets is a good sign of how they treat their children and family members, and not that I can read the mind of the now dead dog, but he likely gave the dog a reason to want to bite him... just a thought.

SO anyway hanging dogs is bad, anyone that actually digested what I wrote will see that I think this guy's a criminal, but I set examples of how I think it would be justified.(Not necessarily hanging, but killing a dog or pet)A point I would like to drive home is simple. We love dogs here, we eat cows. Hindu people generally WORSHIP cows, but will eat other animals, I believe(?) dogs are in that category. Some beleifs are not cut and dry right and wrong, it can be a social, cultural, or geographical difference on beliefs. Or maybe as simple as what you have available to eat. Remember, we are generally a spoiled, snot nosed nation. To deny that is to prove that point immediately. I am only trying to broaden the topic, not defend this guy-because as far as i can tell he's off his rocker.(guy in the story, not "justaguy" lol =)

Hey justaguy, this is my last post directed at you..today.
So, I just looked at your last 20 or so posts, and no joke, you use the word MORON, or refer to posters or the subjects in the articles as MORONS, in roughly 50% of your posts.(anyone else, feel free to confirm this!)
Maybe it's time you extended your vocabulary, and rather than bash people, share your thoughts on the stories, and WHY you think so? It takes one to know one, and you are certainly proving that point with no outside help!

Freeradical: I've read your comments on other stories, and I just can't decide if you're stupid or just a moron. You have something wrong with you ,(just) my thought(s).
That may not bee 100% right either, but it sure was easy to take some of that fat out and reconstruct those sentence fragments.
Go back to school or pay more attention if you're going to try and call someone a moron, or stupid. Especially when you fail to give an explanation of why one is different than the other. Especially if you don't offer your thoughts on the story at hand. Thanks for bashing me without presenting your own thoughts!

There's a reason I chose the name freeradical. My thoughts aren't cut from everyone else's cloth, and I interject something with the intent to make you think a little. Maybe even argue points!I could just agree with what everyone else thinks, or I could throw a completely radical spin on topics to stir it up a bit, and make people think outside the box. The thoughts and comments I see are generally so stereotypical, biased and bland that I can't help but try and make people look at things from another view. Call me a moron, I call you a close minded simpleton. Or maybe you're the moron for not realizing I just like to play devil's advocate and try and start up a real conversation, instead of just jumping on the bandwagon and slapping everyone on the back so I can get my slap too. I strive to make people look at things i a different light, but rather than retort with your logic, you call me a moron. You are a prime example of why I choose to throw out comments that are totally unorthodox, although with a backbone of reason. If you choose to toss them aside without consideration, that's your problem.
I think everything needs to be analyzed fully, not just digested a little, branded with whats "obviously" right or wrong, and sent on down the line.

"I wonder if this guy is married or has kids."
Maybe both are true, and that's why he wanted to kill the pooch? I wouldn't blame him. However, there was a trial, and I assume since he was sentenced in this way, that this is not the case.
I just think everyone is close minded these days with animals. I love animals. I love my dog, but if it attacked anyone I love, I would kill it on the spot.

Gross, yeah. But keep in mind this is America, we think dogs are like people, or even better here. Other countries don't think twice about eating dog, cat or other animals. We think of dogs as pets, other countries see them as just another food source. We kill criminals by way of hanging. What this guy did was wrong, but I think it's funny that so many people rush in to defend the hanging of a dog more so than I see people running in to defend people. The dog didn't do anything wrong to be hung, unless you consider it trying to bite a human something wrong. I'll catch flak for this comment, but I think we have come to love pets TOO much, and I even have some of my own, whom I adore. But if catastrophe happened, you better believe little Fido is first on my list of things to eat when my pantry runs dry.
Why did he want to kill his dog? Was this guy sick, or was the dog a threat? If he had a good reason to kill the dog, I can think of many other terrible ways to kill it rather than hanging. If I'm not mistaken, hanging is still considered "humane" enough to be used as a form of execution, is it not?It would sound TERRIBLE is he electrocuted his dog to death, but the sniper shooter that is going to be executed tonight had a 50/50 chance of being killed by way of lethal injection or-you guessed it-electrocution.Think about that for a minute before you rush in and say hanging is terrible. I don't know the whole story. If I had a dog, and my dog bit my child in a vicious manner, you better believe I'm taking ol' hooch out back, or in the garage, and It's getting put down, no questions asked. Next time, if I were to not be there in a split second, my child would be killed or scarred for life. Pets are great, but my family is much, much better.
I'm just kicking the bees nest here.

freeradical - This guy didn't take the dog to the humane society because that would have defeated his purpose. He gets off on torture whether it's an animal or a human. I wonder if this guy is married or has kids. If he does you can bet he's been abusing them right along with the dog. He will spend the rest of his life going in and out of prison on assault charges, I guarantee it.

Wish part of the plea agreement included never owning a pet again. This guy lacks compassion, sympathy, and has major anger management issues. Going ballistic to the point of hanging the family pet is just a smidge away from "psycho". Everyone around him should be wary.

WHy didn't this guy just give it away? or take it somewhere and drop it off? He could have at least shot it instead of hanging it, to be humane. Thousands of animals are euthanized everyday but the vets aren't sentenced because it's not "inhumane"
So if he were to have just shot it, would the issue be the same? Just curious

First, a shout out to all you Marines out there. Happy birthday Marines!
I think the deal that people make with the DA for a guilty plea is crazy. When the judge is not bounded by the agreement and imposes a sentence twice as long as agree to. Lesson learned, never cut a deal, play it out to the end. When I don't buy health insurance I won't be cutting a deal.
