MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A bill in the state Legislature to cede control of Milwaukee public schools to the mayor is set to be introduced on Wednesday.

Lawmakers working on the measure have made a draft available and are seeking co-sponsors.

Gov. Jim Doyle has said he wants to call lawmakers back into a special session to pass the bill before the end of the year. Doyle says the changes would put Wisconsin in a better position to qualify for federal Race to the Top education stimulus money, which is being awarded to states that show dedication to innovative ideas that lead to better performing schools.

The idea of giving Milwaukee's mayor control of the schools is proving to be a divisive one in the Legislature, with several lawmakers from that city opposed to the concept.
