Bankruptcy filings up

MADISON — Bankruptcy filings in the state are up about 30 percent from this time last year, particularly among seniors struggling with medical expenses.

In the western half of Wisconsin, there were about 7,000 filings for all of last year. This year there were almost that many as of last month.

In eastern Wisconsin, there were more than 14,000 bankruptcy filings by Oct. 1. That number is also up about 30 percent from the previous year.

Marcia Anderson is clerk of courts for the Western District of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. She says the increase is probably a function of job losses and health issues.

She says more people over 60 are filing for bankruptcy, especially those who are trying to pay medical expenses on fixed incomes.

That's why it's important to stay healthy now isn't it.
Granted some health issues are uncontrollable but you'll have a better chance to not have huge medical bills if you get off your computers and get some exercise, quit eating out yadda yadda. This whole country is one big fat lazy hot mess.

Mark_Twain- I for one thought that was nicely put but I'd hate to have to agree with the Obama remarks... hopefully, in due time, you'll get to laugh it off for being proven wrong.

Keep drinking the kool-aid and keep bickering between the two party dictatorship parties. As long as the two parties keep your minds occupied by arguing back and forth, they both win. For real change, we need to boot the parties out! Is it possible? I doubt it with the ease people can be swayed by false tv ads. Do a search on things other than the petty things the parties want you to bicker about. Search: Two Party Dictatorship for one.http://www.thevillager.com/villager_286/naderblastthe.html

Mark_Twain- after reading your comments on the "Madison man charged with assaulting disabled woman" article, I want to congratulate you on being able to post a comment all by yourself. I know you didn't have any help from child- a child wouldn't have anything to do with someone whose logic is as distorted as yours.

The Democratic and Republican political parties would like to thank everyone who is letting 50% of the problem skate by being partisan and only blaming one party.

Both parties have contributed to the bankruptcy problem, supporting irresponsible bank management and/or requiring loans to people incompetent in personal finance. Both parties helped with bailing out the auto industry management who signed off on a pyramid scheme of compensation for workers, or didn't take the gluttonous unions to task for demanding the too-expensive compensation.

Career politicians on both sides keep offering "fixes" which require deficit spending at first (during their current term in office), but with some numbers juggling on paper, will end with a surplus, pay off the national debt, and cure cancer, wipe out poverty and end racism/illiteracy/dandruff -whatever the particular pol thinks sounds best at the moment.

Legislators will cheerfully waste time over bills on what the official state muskrat snack will be when next year's budget bill is overdue. State legislators will speak about "free" Federal money, while local government officials will speak about "free" Federal and State money. Few of them worry about their own taxes as most have the means to wangle deductions you just can't claim when minimum wage jobs are all you can get, if that even.

But as long as 80% of you continue to be sheep and bleat about those "cold-hearted" Republicans or those "irresponsible" Democrats, neither party is seriously worried about which party you are in. They will just sit back and be content in taking their bribes... er, campaign contributions from big business or big labor (both of which frequently tithe to both party's candidates during campaigns).

You'll ridicule someone like Paris Hilton for tarnishing her family name and practically prostituting herself for fame and money, but every year or two you'll VOTE for people to represent your interests in government bodies who do far worse.

No, mark_twain, I believe you started out being partisan in this thread, as even you yourself must be capable of reading. (It goes from the bottom up.) I also believe you make this fourth-grade name calling arguments because you don't have the capability to debate at any higher level. Cheers.

you know ignorance runs rampant in here. I have worked forty plus years of my life still to young for soc. sec and do to injury on the job I am unable to work. my company could not meet my restictions so they laid me off and because of restrictions no one will hire me. I have no insurance no medicaid notta cant even afford to pay to file bancruptcy and you think I want you to support me, not in your lifetime I would not be able to handle your complaining and whining. Obama came into this mess and to blame anyone person is insane. We can all take our part in this for letting it get to this point because of allowing the corruption to go on and standing back and saying nothing until it was to late. My heart goes out to all those who have reached this point and have to lose what they worked hard for, and never thinking they would be without a job they thought they were secure in.

mark_twain - yes that is what people do...so I help them with transportation and paperwork and getting the best care they can...unfortunately I am much less well off than they are and I have several kids to raise (who were born when our finances were much better off before someone attacks about not having kids when you can't afford them!) but I am very lucky to have health insurance

"If you can't afford medical care because of low income and have no assets you are covered by Medicaid."

So...my mother is employed in unskilled labor with absolutely no benefits. My father is disabled. They both have major major health issues. He is 59, she is 61. He had to wait two years after being approved for social security disability to be approved for medicare. They spend over half their income every month on medical expenses and prescriptions, but don't qualify for SSI/medicaid, Badgercare, Medicare, and have too much income for Healthnet. They can be seen at the community health clinic run by Mercy that is affiliated with the Beloit Community Health Clinic, but they have to pay a $75 up front fee to even be seen and then are billed for the entire amount of the appointment and all treatments. There is no prorating...they are completely full pay. They also have absolutely no assets. This is how many people in our city live.

mark_twain, if ignorance is dissent, we are all doomed. The language that you use proves you are simply pursuing a partisan duel, and uninterested in the actual issues at hand.

mark_twain, the government does not "pay for" anything when you declare bankruptcy. Since you do not understand this basic principle of the topic you are discussing, the better and wiser choice might be to shut your mouth.

The article says "seniors" so they should be covered by Medicare, but they are still going bankrupt due to medical bills. Must be things not covered or drug expenses in the "donut hole" of the drug coverage plan???

Mark-Twain, I'm not going to try to explain to you why MANY people are going bankrupt from medical bills...people with jobs and insurance even. You are clearly a very bitter person who won't listen anyway.

I like how republicans like "Economic Darwinism" in the sense that only the strongest will survive, but they have issues with that same principle being taught in a biology class. Yup I wish I could be a republican businessman and drive a mutli billion dollar corporation into the ground and receive a mutli million dollar BONUS for a job well done.

Uh, does nobody realize that Obama was left with a bunch of BushCrap? That's 8 years worth of it to be exact. Of course, look at what Clinton had done with GETTING THE BUDGET TO A HUGE SURPLUS! Now, after 8 years of Bushcrap spending, spending, spending, people want to blame Obama for ALL this crap he was handed on Jan. 20th.

Marky Mark and the Twainy Bunch--Well if you can get away with writing such ridiculous nonsense, I'll do the same.

No thanks to the stingy Republicans who only care about pleasing big business and padding their wallets. From the Republican point of view, if you go bankrupt or lose your job or lose your health insurance, too bad, you should have worked harder.

Thank you BIG O. and the Democrats in congress for being the BOMB!
