District, workers, disagree on pay hike
The Janesville School District is offering a wage freeze to its custodial, maintenance and food workers. The union representing those workers says the district can afford to give them a raise.
That was one of the issues raised as district and union representatives began negotiating a new work contract Thursday. The old contract ran out June 30. Affected are about 250 full- and part-time members of AFSCME Local 938.
The district’s offer calls for the salary schedule to be frozen this year and next year, although those who qualify for experience increases would receive those increases.

BBB, the reason you can't afford to give people a raise is because you didn't give a crap in school and as a result, you were recently promoted to a french fry specialist. Get a life!

but the question is are all the admin team giving up their pay raises this year. i would say no..but in these tough times to still have a job is better than no raise.
the place that i work at we are not getting raises this year and we also are having to take weeks off without pay. but at least we have a job.

I know of no custodians who "stand around all day and abuse what the union gave them". They work hard everyday and are a vital part of the staff. As a parent, I am against even the idea of finding "somebody to do these jobs without the union". Imagine the turnover if the jobs ever became outsourced. We would know nothing about the people having contact with our children. I am a taxpayer, and if a few dollars a year are required from me to help maintain our buildings and maintain quality teachers, I am all for it!

More victims of the "economy card" if the school district can afford to give raises then so be it.
Its this tit for tat reasoning that has gotten us in this mess in the first place. Just cause so and so got a pay freeze doesnt mean that everyone gets a pay freeze.

Unemployment numbers came out today at 10.2%. I'm sure we can find somebody to do these jobs without the union, and at what the district (we, the taxpayers) can afford.
.
How's that hope and change working for ya?...

Just another greedy union, unions have outlived their use. I'm an ex united steel workers union member. Just a bunch of whiners, always crying they don’t get paid enough to do that, or that’s not my job I’m not doing it. And then just stand around all day and abuse what the union got for them anyway. I SAY PAY CUT!!! I WILL NOT PAY FOR YOUR UNNEEDED RAISE

I am the school district & I can not afford to give you a pay raise. I took a pay cut last year & again this year. It was either take the pay cut or get laid off.
