Thanksgiving dinner could cost more in Wis.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Your Thanksgiving dinner could cost more in Wisconsin than in states that don't have a minimum markup law.
Walmart is advertising a homemade Thanksgiving dinner for eight at less than $20. But, in its Wisconsin ad, Walmart said that $20 doesn't go as far because of the state's Unfair Sales law, which bans companies from selling items below cost.
In Wisconsin, the ad offers frozen turkeys for 86 cents a pound. Without the law in Illinois, Walmart's ad has turkeys for 40 cents a pound. Stove Top stuffing is $1.15 a box at Wisconsin Walmarts compared with 78 cents in Illinois. A can of Green Giant canned vegetables is 6 cents more in Wisconsin.
Supporters of the minimum markup law say it protects smaller retailers who can't afford to sell below cost.

The Illinois sales tax on food is only 1% so if you go to the rockton il walmart and you live in beloit you will likely make out ahead. Wisconsin needs to end this "protect the little guy' crap. there is no more mom and pop shops anymore. Economies of scale will always allow walmart and woodmans to sell food cheaper than a corner grocey store will ever be able to.

Just remember by going to the flat lander state you will use more gas and the cost will wash out so you won't save any money. so it isn't really worth it to drive that far........

Were as I do not completely boycott Wal-mart, I only go there as a last resort. We do our grocery shopping at Woodman's and anything else we pick up at various other stores. My family (mother, father, etc, etc, etc) call Wal-mart either The Anti-Christ store or China-mart. The way that they bully corporations into lowballing what Wal-mart gets from them effects small businesses way more than people realize. My SIL worked at a Wal-mart out of state and one of the things they did there was keep most employees below full time hours so they wouldn't have to pay benefits.

I must shop at different stores as I have never been treated rudely at any of the stores nor have I had to wait in a line for 35 minutes. Must be one of the lucky ones. What is the secret to being treated rudely?

I still go to Sentry any time I head to the store, it much more worth it to me to be able to run in and get what I need fast than to park 2 blocks away and stand in line for 35 minutes to check out at Walmart or Woodmans! and people are soooo rude at both of those stores. I will pay the mark up to not deal with Walmart!

carlitosway there are allot of local shops that beat wal-marts prices. You are one of the people are brainwashed into shopping there. I haven't been to a wal-mart in four year (yes 4 yrs) I manage to get everything I need without stepping foot into that circus. I also take pride in supporting my community with shopping local.

walkinothershoes you bash walmart and I know many people who work there and have no problem with the their employer.if other stores give me the prices walmart offers and I will shop there. Walmart is not all that different in grocery prices then other competitors. I watch for sales and shop where I get the best price.

"Do you have any idea how many Wal-mart workers make so little that they qualify for food stamps (cards, whatever) and echo turkey dinners for the poor?"
Do you have any idea how many NON-Wal-mart workers make so little that they qualify too? Most retail establishments pay a similar rate.

woodmans isnt a big box store . I think theyre very comparable to walmart in prices.
would you save any money by getting the turkey from a farmer? My uncle always got his from a farmer.
sarahb1- CORRECT stove top isnt t-day haha. It really isnt that hard to make your own. some dried up bread, chix soup stock, sage and spices, celery and onion. toss in oven. mom in law makes a yummy corn bread stuffing.
We always brine the turkey so it is nice and tender. Same with pork.

Napalm you do understand the logic behind everyone being angry at the big box stores like Wal-mart don't you? They dictate to the suppliers what price they will pay and because they purchase in large volume, they are able to do so. If Sentry lowered it's price they would be losing money. The smaller stores pay fair wages and take care of their employees. Wal-mart has a reputation for not taking care of their employees. Do you have any idea how many Wal-mart workers make so little that they qualify for food stamps (cards, whatever) and echo turkey dinners for the poor? THat Napalm, is the problem with your precious little Wal-mart.

The Beloit Walmart is still considered Wisconsin. Also, the tax rates in IL are much higher than 5.5%. While it sounds like a rocking deal, between gas & IL tax, you won't come out ahead.

Everyone hates high prices, yet they hate walmart. The hell with the small time stores....this world is all about money and survival, not looking out for others profits. This law is so stupid. Because some people wish to have small stores I have to pay the consiquences???? Its common marketing skills...Sentry = high priced low business....or Woodmans = low price and busy busy busy....doing so good they expanded how many times now? And building a huge new office building in the parking lot. Just as an example...if Sentry lowered their priced 50% of the people on the west side of town wouldnt drive all the way to the other side to go to woodmans. Duh.

You also need to take in to account that Wisconsin doesn't have a sales tax on food, where as Illinois does. So depending on the county you are getting your groceries from in IL, you may be paying about the same here in Wisconsin anyway.
