Janesville compost hours confuse users

In the middle of the season for raking and hauling leaves, a city council debate about shortening hours at the city compost site next year has left some city resident confused about when the site is open this fall.

“We handle hours requests on a very routine basis,” said Peter Riggs, assistant operations director.

It turns out that the council debate is only part of the problem. Seasonal changes in compost site hours probably cause confusion, too.

The site’s hours change three times in November.

While next year’s city budget has not yet been approved, the majority of council members in a study session agreed to save $15,538 by cutting weekday evening and Saturday afternoon hours at the compost site.

Any reductions would start in 2010.

I agree with No1shouldHate. It would be nice if they left a few nights and weekend hours since there are still a few of us working in this city and can not make it during business hours. Maybe they could cut the morning hours once or twice during the week? I was there two Monday's ago around 6:30 PM and the place was packed. I was there twice on Saturday afternoon and had to wait to drop off both times. I don't mind waiting in line. I do mind the council making it impossible to drop off my clippings. I would be curious to see a log of busiest times and days.

Janesville could save lots of money by eliminating the buses that drive around with nobody on them. Being a bus driver in Janesville must be a very well-paid, but lonely job.

So why exactly do we need a paid employee to sit there and watch us throw grass on a pile? I have assisted people with work in multiple other towns and their compost sites were open 24/7 with nobody sitting in a booth reading a book all day to guide you where to dump.....it was pretty self explanatory. If anyone is going to pay a fee at the compost site it should be those that use it in abundance such as landscapers and tree cutting companies, or a small fee to take home the compost/wood chips to pay for their processing. The hours thing is just rediculous. The dump and the compost site have never been in any way convenient for the working people that typically do yard work after work or on weekends.

Here's another suggestion -

Since we're all about charging extra fees these days, what about charging $1 a load that comes into the dump? I bet you could recoup your $15,538 savings pretty easily then. I have a feeling most of us would pay just to keep the stinky, rotting grass off our properties.

What a terrible idea. Let's cut evening hours on a facility that many of us use after work. Have any of the council memeber's been to the compost site at 6 pm on a Monday or Thursday evening?? Sorry City of Janesville, but I think you need to find other area's to cut spending. Find some other way to "inconvenience" us.

If it's closed just go up to the landfill guy, and get the key.

Fantastic! I was hoping we could get even less services for our tax dollars. This is a stroke of pure genius! Since our government policies continue to erode our industrial employment base, the only jobs left will be lawn care, and so having access to the compost facility wouldn't be necessary after working hours. Thanks again to this brillant study group!
