Rock County settles with former employees
A husband and wife who used to work for Rock County will get $240,000 in a settlement with the county.
A federal court in Madison on Thursday dismissed Marvin and Connie Vick’s case against the county when a settlement was reached. The couple claimed disability discrimination.
The county will pay $150,000, Corporation Counsel Jeff Kuglitsch said. Insurance will cover the rest, he said.

Thanks for the update Scott. Just a thought, but perhaps the Gazette could occasionally give short updates...such as you just did...on stories of interest that are pending follow-up.

The Gazette continues to pursue the story behind the resignation of the county's human resources director. We have filed three open records requests and have received no records so far. We are waiting for the county's response to our latest request. This process is often messy and time-consuming, but we are determined to follow it through. We will publish a follow-up story as soon as we believe we have something worth reporting.

The Gazette is quick to whine about being the community watchdog when they are trying to convince people to subscribe....but they seem to have short memories when it comes to follow up.

I'm surprised these people didn't get more money. What a way to be treated by your employer. I also would like to see an article on why the Human Resources manager was fired. Is the Gazette not reporting this story for a reason?

wow, all I wondered this morning was if this had anything to do with the firing of the H R director and the site staff would not allow it to be posted for more than five min.. Now after reading all of this was he the only one who stepped on these employee's 14th amendment rights and will they be punished as well

John Becker was the Human Resources director
****
Charmian Klyve is the Human Services director and the reason that more has not been written regarding the Juvinile Detention Center is that the Human Services Board has directed the Craig Knutson County Admin. to hire and independent person interview the supervisors and staff. The investigation is still going on.

Readers need to be aware that the county suit was not settled until after a federal jury ruled against the county on its liability. After that, it was a matter of damage control. It could have been a whole lot worse.

SwissChick,
I think that they've both returned their jobs after their lay-offs. The suit was for the period of time that they were laid off, but they are both back to work as I understand.

It said on the radio and here that they are "former" employees. I understood from the radio that they had been "laid off". Doesn't sound like current employees to me. They why woule they sue for disability discrimination?

Another issue with Rock County and its administration. Hmmm.
Whatever happened the promised follow-up to the story that Scott Angus said the Gazette was going to do on the personnel director JOHN BECKER'S sudden and suspicious resignation, pending the Gazette's open records request? What was the response to that request? What was the Gazette's reaction to that response?
Where is the Gazette's follow-up on what was turning out by all accounts to be Rock County JUVENILE PROBATION'S and Human Resources director Charmain Klyve's direct attempts to manipulate the juvenile detention center's numbers, and then manipulate the apparently superficial and therefor flawed investigation into those allegations?
I'd echo the concerns expressed by comment makers in other current stories -- that line-level Rock County employees lives seem to be open books, while the administration appears to be shielded from any scrutiny. I see a lot of comments by County and other local administrators about the need for "TRANSPARENCY" in government in many of these Rock County related stories, but the degree of transparency (also likely to be called "TRUTH" by the person on the street) certainly seems be directly correlated with who you are individually and the level at which you are employed by the county.
Very sad and disappointing, and especially so in a town whose citizens are forced to rely on what in essence is only one monopolistic "news" source and it's weak investigations.

They are not former employees. They both still work for the county as I understand.

That's rock county these days. Hopefully a few other issues with insurance and discrimination will get resolved too with them.

The county should have worked to prevent this from happening with all the laws in place for the disabilty act. WAY TO GO ROCK COUNTY.
