Obama visits Wis. in midst of education debate
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — President Barack Obama's visit to Wisconsin on Wednesday comes as state lawmakers are considering a proposal to allow the mayor of Milwaukee to take over control of that city's struggling school district.
Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle supports the move as does Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, a potential Democratic candidate for governor next year.
There's also support for the move within the Obama administration.
U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan supports mayors taking control of big-city school districts where academic performance is suffering, saying that leads to strong leadership and stability.
No bill on the takeover plan has been introduced yet in the Legislature. Doyle says a special session later this month may be needed.

Here we go, government is just getting bigger and taking over more. Last I heard the kids outside those schools in chicago were getting shot up? Pretty soon we all will have someone from government living in our houses with us making sure we'er doing it thier way.

The argument is made that several mayors have successfully overhauled the school districts in major cities, including Chicago and New York. I don't quite know why the school boards in those cities were doing such a comparably poor job, but when you have a politically accountable mayor it seems to make a difference. State legislation is usually necessary to make it possible.
.
There are good reasons to be skeptical, of course, as it could conceivably just put another group of patronage hacks in charge. But I don't know of any mayoral takeovers where that has been an issue.

Nobody likes you, Charlie Brown. You don’t have any friends. Everybody thinks you’re wishy-washy and blah. You’re weak and insignificant and alone, and you always will be. I don’t know why you even try to start conversations with other people. You’re no good.
