GREEN BAY — A 16-year employee of the Green Bay Water Utility said he took a temporary street sign named for Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers on a dare. He said he didn’t intend to steal it.

Water Utility General Manager Bill Nabak said 47-year-old Thomas S. Hodkiewicz of Green Bay has been placed on paid leave while the matter is sorted out.

Hodkiewicz was arrested and cited for theft about 2 a.m. Saturday after a police officer spotted the sign in a car.

Hodkiewicz told the Green Bay Press-Gazette that he planned to take the sign down and take pictures of it then put it back. Looking back, he said, "I was just an idiot.“

Last week, Mayor Jim Schmitt temporarily renamed Minnesota Avenue in Rodgers’ honor in the run-up to the Vikings-Packers game.

If it were not for Bret Favre, it wouldn't be.

2 am on a Sunday? Perhaps alcohol was involved? "I dunno, it sounded like a really good idea at the time, but now that it's morning, I realize it was pretty idiotic"

bobb1951, perhaps a more-suitable punishment would be to make him watch the first half of Green Bay-Tampa Bay game. Or at the very least make him responsible for the Packers offensive line.

Well, it seems like he's coming clean about how stupid it was. I'd be willing to call it a prank and sentence him to community service (in which case his job shouldn't be at risk). The only thing on CCAP is a speeding ticket. Really, the law does recognize intent as a factor.

The punishment for this egregious chicanery - stealing a Packer player street sign - must be nothing short of being forced to watch every Packer game from 1969 to 1991. Tongue planted ever so firmly in cheek.

He will probably be fired If he is part of the city work force, that is called theft of city property and what a wast of 16 years no retirement for him.

Good for him. That sign was a FARCE and had NO LEGAL BEARING. Go Favre. Go senior citizens everywhere.

Risking a 16 year employment record because of what? A dare. At 47 he's too old for such a stupid stunt.
