JANESVILLE – A Rock County sheriff’s deputy was arrested Monday after being accused of sexually assaulting a young woman at a Halloween party in Milton.

Milton police took Steven L. Stenulson, 38, into custody at his residence in Janesville around 2 p.m. Monday, according to authorities. He was arrested on a charge of second-degree sexual assault.

Milton police issued a press release, saying that the arrest stems from an incident at a party in the 500 block of College Street.

Milton police said enforcement action is anticipated against the residents, who allegedly permitted alcohol to be served to minors at the party.

Stenulson was not on duty at the time of the incident, said Sheriff Bob Spoden.

Stenulson was placed on administrative leave, and his duty weapon was confiscated, Spoden said.

Spoden said the sheriff’s department is conducting its own internal investigation.

I hope everyone will remember that this person is only accused and is not convicted. He is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Comments should stay on here. Cops are no better than anyone else. In fact, sounds like some of them are worse. I am sure there will be more great cop stories in the future. Keep posted I guess.

Monday afternoon, the Milton Police Department found PHYSICAL EVIDENCE that was consistent with the girls story and arrested Stenulson at his home in Janesville.

per: http://www.nbc15.com/home/headlines/6871...

So, this is more than just an "accusation by a rejected woman", which is horribly offensive to all victims of rape. And, I have NEVER understood why the Gazette only reports half of the available information. Channel 15 has interviews with the Milton Police Chief, and a lot of information, yet, as with all stories, the Gazette simplifies it to 10 sentences.

The reason the comments need to be disabled is that it always seems to get away from the story anyway. Soon enough people will start talking about things that have nothing to do with it.

bobb1951: Doesn't matter to me who the subject of the story is. I just know that people start attacking each other and both the victim and the accused (and their families) end up being hurt.

I agree... Shut off the comments... but really the gazette likes people being jerks to one another.... They never turned off the comments about the other Deputy... Hey Gazette - remember the "golden rule", can't wait for someone from your place to screw up so everyone can be jerks to them too.

Bottom line is what is a 38 yr old man doing at an underage drinking party to begin with?

Why should these comments be shut down? Because he was a cop and should up hold the law? Not be at a party where minors are being served alcohol? Leave the comments, remove the nasty ones.

Police arrest, DA's Charge, and Juries or Judges convict. Let them do their jobs, there will be plenty of time to second guess them.

Innocent until proven guilty. Charged and accused do NOT mean guilty from the start. I agree - disable the comments.

Sad. There is a higher standard of professional accountability. That's why this is front page news. So let's just let the Sheriff deal with it. There's a lot of good people working under him, and I'll bet they'll all want this handled appropriately.

laduce - I do not deny the fact that what is accused is a morally wrong thing. And that yes, this person is supposed to be protecting the law not violating it. All I am saying is that I don't think people should be rude with their comments about something they don't even know about. Does anyone know what the words "accused" and "charged" means? IT MEANS HES NOT BEEN FOUND GUILTY YET... so quit it with the false accusations and LET THE FAMILIES INVOLVED AND THE AUTHORITIES deal with this, don't throw your unnecessary comments in... that's all I'm asking.

Without being presumptuous on this case; crimes against police officers carry a more severe consequence, shouldn't the penalty go the otherway around as well, with police officers being held to a higher standard when breaking the law?

acursive- YOU are kidding, right? Let the families deal with this? This is a person that could be responding to an issue with MY family and find my daughter passed out. This is a PUBLIC issue. We are trusting this person to live by a decent moral code and not to harm anyone. This is a public issue.

You are obviously personally involved, so, I wish you healing- whatever your involvement, but, denying that we have a right to know and to comment is ridiculous. WE have every right. We are supposed to trust him, and, our taxes pay his salary. We are SUPPOSED to question things when they are very, very wrong.

People that have no idea what happened and weren't there shouldn't be talking. Only the people involved have the right to discuss the situation.

And some things just shouldn't be said. Especially cracking BAD jokes about a very TWISTED representation on the Gazette's (and other media outlets in the area) part.

I understand that this has to be reported and BLOWN OUT OF PROPORTION because he's a deputy, but shut up people. Mind your own business and let the families deal with the problem.

He being an adult should also be cited for allowing underage consumption of alcohol. Usually any adults at residence are charged when this occurs, and apparently he was there.

So what ever happen to the follow-up story on John Becker. A rank and file employee gets in trouble and it's an immediate news story, a county big-wig gets a free ride.
