MILWAUKEE — An organization that focuses on exercise science has ranked the Twin Cities as the second-fittest of the nation's most populous metropolitan areas. Milwaukee was ranked No. 17.

The American College of Sports Medicine based its 2009 rankings on how well the communities encourage healthy lifestyles.

Minneapolis ranked high for the number of people who walk or bicycle to work. But the report says not enough residents eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

Milwaukee scored well because of a lower percentage of people with diabetes, and more farmers' markets per person. It lost points because of its higher percentage of smokers.

The Washington D.C. metro area was named most fit. Denver, Boston and San Francisco rounded out the top five.
