UAW members approve General Motors concessions
DETROIT — The United Auto Workers union has ratified a package of concessions designed to reduce General Motors Corp.'s labor costs, completing a key piece of the automaker's massive restructuring effort.
UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said at a news conference Friday that 74 percent of GM's 54,000 U.S. production and skilled-trade workers voted in favor of the deal.
The vote comes before an expected Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection filing by GM on Monday. Bankruptcy experts say having the labor agreement in place will help move the process through court more quickly.
"We accept what it is and did the best we could," Gettelfinger said. "We've given a lifeline to GM until they can rebound."
UAW leaders agreed to the revised contract last week that freezes wages, ends bonuses, eliminates noncompetitive work rules and ends the possibility of a strike until the next contract expires in 2015. The UAW said the cuts would save GM $1.2 billion to $1.3 billion a year.

The blame net can be cast in all directions, but one move I don't understand is the UAW stiking (just less than 2 years ago) instead of pushing to have a UAW delegate on the board of directors for the companies (GM, Ford, & Chrysler). Instead they have fostered and pushed for a mood of "us vs. them". They never believed GM was in dire financial trouble intil they hired an independant financial investigator to pour over GM's books. Only then, (after the strike) did they realize a little too late, that GM was in big trouble.

Shopier- why yes you got most of that right, even through your sarcasm.. Just wait and watch and soon you will see that without something like GM around here, everyone will lose in the long run.

I am a retiree from G.M. of 40 plus years of service. Through the years I have seen how G.M. does business, and some of it was foolish. Now they want the workers to take concessions so they can be profitable so the CEO's can line their pockets again. Through the contracts we have won and loss. I could name some of the gains we made but loss them in another contract. So if someone tells you the G.M. is generous, think again.

the UAW has made concessions previous to this one. management and UAW entered negotions last year after the July lay offs because management said they needed help to survive. they asked the union to pass local contracts with 100 points they said were needed. these were amendments to the previous years contract. Janesville was the only local that passed all 100 points. so all i can say, is don't blame this local. management came to us and we cooperated.

Now the UAW accepts GM's concessions. Maybe if they weren't so he11 bent striking for over inflated wages before GM tanked.. this wouldn't be happening now. GREAT timing UAW.. You did your members proud.
And we all know whatever concessions made now, are going to be fair game whenever GM wants to bail out of them later down the road.. maybe after the bankruptcy over??? Companies get away with it all the time now.
Good Luck

Ah, yes. The auto workers; they built Janesville, they are the heroes of the universe, the world cannot exist without them, life as we know it will cease without them, they are the hardest working people that ever lived- no one else works as hard as them and on and on and on ad nauseam.
