Economic development tool would help Janesville
JANESVILLE – The Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee voted early Friday morning to create a “Development Opportunity Zone” for Janesville.
A DOZ would offer tax credits to companies that create jobs. Five million dollars is designated for the zone, to be used over five years, with an option to extend the zone for another five years and another $5 million.
Sen. Judy Robson, D-Beloit, and Rep. Mike Sheridan, D-Janesville, deserve much of the credit for getting this item inserted into the state budget, said Dan Cunningham of Forward Janesville.
A DOZ was used to help create Beloit’s Gateway development.

Note that the only current DOZ is the Gateway development on the east side of Beloit. I'm not sure if this DOZ is flexible enough to be targeted at the GM and other industrial brownfields or whether it is designed more for potential sprawl development; I hope it's the former rather than the latter. We already have several successful industrial parks and districts.
