Train hits minivan in Milwaukee suburb
MILWAUKEE (AP) — A freight train smashed into a minivan stuck on railroad tracks Monday as a police officer scrambled to help a man pull his wife and child to safety in a Milwaukee suburb.
Elm Grove Police Chief Jim Gage says it is unclear why the van was on the tracks, but it appeared a 23-year-old woman got stuck in traffic about 9:40 a.m. Monday — not long before the start of a Memorial Day parade nearby.
Gage says an officer nearby helped the husband, who was driving another vehicle, get the woman out. The child was still inside when the train hit the van.
Gage says the van hit the 41-year-old officer and 47-year-old father. Gage says they were in surgery Monday afternoon.
The mother and child were unharmed. The couple’s other two children were in the other vehicle.

You are completely wrong. The police even told her that she was at no fault and that it was unforeseen and unavoidable. They also told her that if wouldn't have moved the van forward and to the right at a slight angle, her baby would have received the full impact of the hit. The train hit the front portion of the van instead of the side door where the baby was. She did everything right except predict that traffic was going to abruptly stop as she was crossing. They also told her that if it would have been seconds later, it would have been the car behind her that would have been in that situation. The car behind her was interviewed and they admitted that they would have been there because traffic was flowing at a smooth pace. The bars came down immediately as she was stopped from traffic ahead of her. Please know the facts before typing stupid things that hurt people that are already hurting.

I think was SwissChick was trying to say is that you should not attempt to cross tracks unless there is already enough room on the other side for you to make it all the way over without stopping/slowing down. Never assume that traffic is going to continue to move along.

They didn't have to get her out. She got out on her own and yelled for help. Her husband was ahead of her in a car not behind. She did not park on the tracks. The long line of traffic was moving at a slow pace and then just stopped as she was crossing the tracks. Just as she stopped, the gaurds came down. She tried to drive around the guards to get out of the way and her wheels got stuck in the raised tracks. The train was already in sight and she got out of the van. Her husband and the officer were running over to help. The train hit within secs. The whole ordeal happened in less than a minute. If the traffic would have stopped a sec or two later, it would have wouldn't have been her sitting there. It would have been the people directly behind her van.

I hope everyone recovers, but this should be a reminder "DO NOT EVER PARK ON TRAIN TRACKS FOR ANY REASON".

I don't understand why the husband and police officer had to "get the woman out". What was wrong with her that she wasn't able to get out of the car on her own?

Remarkably like the story Chief Moore likes to tell about why he became a policeman.

Thanks to the officer who went in harm's way to try to save lives. I hope he didn't suffer any permanent injury.

The Mom is 40 and the dad is 46. The child is almost two. The Dad is still in surgery and will hopefully have a full recovery.

Sorry. I based that off of "The mother and child were unharmed" since I was commenting on the child.

I think it's safe to say this since nobody was hurt: If the kid is old enough, he now has one hell of a story to tell his friends at school tomorrow.
