Wisconsin has 230 fewer seasonal parks workers
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — As the economy slumps, more people are staying close to home these days for recreation. But if they plan to hit a state park, there will be fewer employees to handle the interest.
Department of Natural Resources spokesman Adam Collins says the state has about 230 fewer seasonal parks workers this year than in previous years.
The state has 104 parks, including recreation areas, forests and trails. They receive roughly 14 million visits a year.
Reservations to the state’s campgrounds are up this year.
Collins also alluded to recent news that the state’s budget deficit is larger than predicted. He says that means all state agencies, including the DNR, will likely have to find additional cuts.

My family went to Cadiz Springs (state park) yestereday and we had a very lovely park ranger there to take the entrance fee. He was quite knowledgable on the park, pointed out to us the best place to fish with our children and even gave the kids some tips on great hiking. I understand the need to cut back because of the economy, but the man was just wonderful and I really think an asset to the park. I would hate to think he wouldn't have beeen there!!
