Forest Service: Firewood ban still on
RHINELANDER, Wis. (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service is reminding outdoor enthusiasts in northern Wisconsin that a firewood ban still is in effect.
The ban prohibits firewood from outside Wisconsin and any cut south of state Highway 29 from being used in the Chequamegon-Nicolet (sheh-WAHM’-eh-gon nik-oh-LAY’) National Forest.
The ban is to keep the destructive emerald ash borer from spreading from southern Wisconsin.
Experts believe the borer, which has destroyed millions of ash trees as close as Michigan, made its way to the Midwest by people who have transported firewood.
The Forest Service says campers may notice large box-kite-looking purple traps hanging from high trees. They are being used to detect the presence of the harmful borer in the 1.5 million-acre forest.
