Dane County sees more deaths from heroin in 2008
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Dane County investigators say cheap, potent heroin is responsible for a growing number of overdose deaths.
The Dane County Narcotics and Gang Task Force says 14 people died from heroin in 2008, up from eight in 2007.
Sgt. Gordy Disch says drug seizures in Mexico and the southwest United States have limited the supply of cocaine so deaths from that drug are decreasing.
Meanwhile, gangs are bringing in more heroin from South America and Afghanistan.
Disch says heroin is now cheaper than cocaine and prescription drugs.
It has been the biggest killer in Dane County since 2005, and the death rate is rising. Heroin was responsible for 77 percent of the overdose deaths in Dane County last year, compared to 38 percent in 2007.
